hello, i got a set of kawasaki sadlebags for x-mas. i was wondering if there was another option besides the kawi piece that holds it off the exhaust. i was going to make an extra shield to hold the bag off. if anyone has any info let me know. the bag has heat retardent material on the inside close to where the exhaust would be. is a shield even nessasary. thanks, metin

I used a set of Teknic nylon bags all last season and had no problems with anything melting. All I had was some foil insulation tape on the bags by the exhaust. They did scuff the plastic a little at the contact points if thats a concern to you.

I made a heat shield for those same bags out of a piece of rolled thin steel, from a chimney type charcoal lighter that was worn out. It worked well. After a while I took it off and mounted the bags a little more forward, in front of the rear luggage rack instead of through it. Freeway runs are what makes the muffler melt the bags. I still use mine, though, they have about 25,000 miles on them like that.

For the best protection, check out the Happy Trails Original Side Racks. http://www.angelfire.com/ut/moab/klr_body.html I have these in basic black, mellow yellow and hammertone gray. Fred http://www.arrowheadmotorsports.com http://www.angelfire.com/ut/moab/cmc.html

I made a second heat shield with a piece of aluminum, longer screws, and a pile of washers to separate the shields. Works great to keep my Chase-Harper bags from getting too hot. Unfortunately, I've toasted the back end of my right side cover a bit from the bags leaning on it. A crushed beer can jammed between the muffler and side cover has prevented further damage. It takes a little practice crushing the can to the right thickness, so I recommend you start with a twelver. By number 7 or 8 you'll either get it right or won't give a damn. __Arden

A generous lister loaned me the Kawasaki saddlebags for my Mexico trip. Are the bags "waterproof" or do I need to use auxillary red neck luggage (i.e. plastic trashbags). I made my own side rack from a $5 piece of 1/2" steel pipe. Also, is there a website or does someone have photos of these in use? The metal passenger hand holds seem to be in the way. Jeff Jones

Jeff: You will need to use the trash bags! To install the bags, the longer strap on the back portion of the bags goes through the hand hold, then across the rack, under the turn signal, then clips into the short fastner on the rear portion of the bags. This is done on each side. The front straps goes down throught the rear foot peg bracket, back up to the latch. Have a good trip and drain the bags after the rains, they will hold water. Jeff, I would definitely use the trash bags. They Kaw Bags are nice but not WP. I used to use a lot of zip lock bags. Good luck on your trip. Brent

Hello Gents, I am planning a trip and I am looking for some soft saddlebags. I know Kawasaki makes some (K99994-499A) however after buying the Kaw tank bag I was wondering if anyone had any better options for saddlebags? Pete

I recently bought a pair of the Ortlieb soft saddlebags and could not be happier... I gave serious consideration to the Wolfman 'Expedition' saddlebags because I really like my Wolfman tankbag - but they are not 100% waterproof. If you don't ride a lot on the rain - they would probably be ideal as well... http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/DryBag-Saddlebags-p-16156.html http://www.wolfmanluggage.com/index.html A bit old but this is a good comparison: http://www.motorcyclecruiser.com/accessoriesandgear/textile_saddlebag_comparison/ Jim
