If you are in the Pacific Northwest it is far better to use a synthetic sleeping bag than a down one. In humid and cold weather down accumulates moisture and can become dangerous. Synthetics are hollow fibers like polar bear fur and stay warm even when soaking wet. Test the quality of the synthetic material by putting your arm inside the bag at the store. If it immediately starts feeling warm it's the right stuff. I usually use a medium stuff sack with my pad inserted rolled up and then spread, a heavy space blanket in the bottom (becomes a ground sheet & reflective), the bag stuffed in, and a poncho folded over the top. This provides an extra layer of protection all over with the bag in the middle and has a wind and rain proof cover right on top in case you are stuck in the elements. I use an REI half-dome tent for hiking and MC camping (www.rei.com). It is a two-person tent which means it is not as ultra-light for long distance hiking as some one-person tents but carrying the extra few ounces is worth while to me for the extra room to move around. It packs small, has great ventilation, is not very expensive and the best part is that you can assemble it in the dark in about two minutes without need for pegs or strings. OTOH, if you shop Wally World, you can keep your travel luggage to a minimum. Find a Wally World at the end of the day, and buy the tent of your choice. Keep the box and the receipt. In the morning, or whenever you are ready to move on, box it up and return it. You don't need an excuse, but if it rains, you will have one. Repeat as necessary.

Maybe that's because on another email list I participate in someone very seriously suggested doing exactly the same thing with bicycles at Wally World when traveling to a town and needing a bicycle for a few days. This person was completely serious and even after being questioned saw nothing at all wrong with doing this. If your post was meant as irony or humor, then I apologize for my comments, but from just reading it, there was not a hint of irony in it or anything to read between the lines. BTW, I had no idea that you believe KRL riders were more "sanctimonious" than anyone else. Fascinating. Maybe your personal hell will be filled with KLR riders instead of HD riders.......... "Sanctimonious KLRist" was written in haste, and nit well put, although I have encountered a lot of sanctimoniousness on the various lists over the years. A hell full of KLRists? I'd take that.

Back in my younger days (I`m 39) I might or would have done something like that. But now it`s a matter of personal pride. I would never stoop so low has the 90% of the people I got to haul around in my city bus. After observing these people, they convinced me to stop smoking, drinking, druging, keeping a job, although mine sucks (what job doesn`t?), and not trying and to get a free ride. I`m not saying I`m better than anyone else, It`s just that my passengers has scared me strait! My 2 cents worth. Kyle
