broken water pump shaft

Hi all, Im going to buy a new KLR this spring and I was wondering can I demand the the dealership replace the doohickey before i buy it, or will they just refuse. Also, how much does an extended warrenty ususally go for and is it worth it in your opinion. Thanks, Garrett Bayonne,NJ

The dealership certainly won't replace it until you fork over the funds for the bike. They'll replace it then (at cost to you), and they'll tell you that it will void the warranty (even though it won't).

Whatever the price, it's about twice as much as it should be, and no, it's not worth it.

<><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><> Garrett, I don't think you should even mention the doohickey to the dealer. You're on the east coast and the are quite a few listers near you. Host a doohickey party and get someone to bring the special tools and have at it. I don't know how much the extended warranty costs and my suggestion is you don't get it. I have it on my bike cause the previous owner paid for it. I don't know if the dealer here has ever seen my KLR. Unless the engine has a serious issue while still under warranty they'll never see it. If you get the extended warranty you're betting there will be a problem that is covered. The dealer and KHI are betting you won't. Also you'll have a warranty for a while just because you bought a new bike. I would bet that any issues you have with the bike will either happen under the stock warranty or wouldn't be covered anyway. I suggest you spend the money on safety gear and enjoy your spring on a new KLR. My suggestion to you is not to have the dealership do it. They are only going to cheap Kawi parts anyway. You need to replace it with a good unit from Fred @ Arrowhead. If you could see the 2 parts side by side you'd be sold on appearance alone. Save money and do it yourself (its easy). Lots of online help available plus lots of excellent advice right here on this forum. Glenn.

I approached my dealer about replacing the stock Kawi doo with an aftermarket item, just to see what they said. They will only replace the doo with a Kawasaki part. They will not replace Kawasaki parts with non-Kawi parts. Of course, they put all sorts of non-Kawasaki stuff inside and on streetbikes...but they sell those parts. --- Glenn wrote:

Hi folks, I've been trying to figure out why my A14 suddenly started overheating. After checking the thermostat and radiator switch, I proceded to the water pump. Upon removing the cover, it was obvious; the impeller nut fell out with the shaft threads still in it! After checking this lists messages, I see that I'm not the first to have this problem. I saw where one lister had a machine shop weld a replacement for the small diameter part of the shaft. Did this hold long-term? My brother-in-law suggested tapping the end of the shaft. Or simply silver-soldering the impellor in place. Comments? Has anyone determined whether the small shaft is threaded or pressed into the large one? Thanks for any help! I bought the bike new, broke it in carefully, and have not abused it, so I'm really surprised that this problem has occurred. It has only 7100 miles, and is otherwise in great condition.
