State Farm.
Inexpensive and reliable, Just like a KLR-650
When I insure my bikes, they only ask 2 things (other than the Make /
Model / VIN # info):
1) Size in cc's
2) Is it a Turbo?
I still wonder what's up the the "is it a turbo?" question - like, the
bike ain't powerful, fast, and dangerous UNLESS it has a turbo??

www.progressive.com Quotes are free, might try them also.
As for the "Turbo" look at the type of rider whom buys a turbocharged
motorcycle, and ask yourself if they really plan on keeping at the
posted speed limits, or a close proximity to them.
As for the cc thing, I think its 700cc and up that make the insurance
shoot up, or maybe over 700cc something like that.
Maybe thats why the makers have a pretty good selection of sub-700cc
bikes to pick from.
Rode a 500cc Turbo Charged Honda years back, shipmate imported his
bike back from Japan, took that sucker down A1A in Florida and
watched the LED Turbo Boost gauge kinda linger towards the bottom for
a bit then she jumped to full boost, glad I was hanging on tight....
Returned it and patted my KZ400 on the gas tank when I got back.

Rates are very different Dave depending on what area you are in. I am in
Southern California and have compared all the major companies on my bikes
('96 GPZ 1100, 2002 KLR 650 and 2003 KL 250 Super Sherpa) - by far the best
coverage and best rates for me are through GMAC insurance. Hundreds of
dollars less than GEICO, Progressive, State Farm, etc.
You may have to spend some time on the phone comparing coverages and rates.

My Progressive coverage was about to expire, so I called Bike-Line to see what they could do for me. Their quote was almost $300 cheaper per year than Progressive for the same two bikes. I added comprehensive on the bike I keep in the city and it was _still_ over $100 cheaper. Thanks, Zach! Thor P.S. If you have them quote two bikes that are kept in different locations, you'll have to have them write two separate policies, as it turns out. Their web site just can't seem to do this at all, so you'll have to talk to them on the phone. Remind them to apply the multi-bike discount if you have them insure two bikes at once this way; it cut almost half the cost off my second bike.> On Fri, 2004-09-10 at 14:25, scipio52 wrote: > > Does anybody have any advice on motorcycle insurance companies? > > > > Dave > > '90 KLR650 > > http://www.bike-line.com/ > > They rock and are cheap (at least here in DC). It all has to do with the company & the area the insured lives in.
For years, while I lived in Roswell, NM, up to 2003 I had a policy
through the Rider magazine's Rider Club, it was GMAC Ins. Co. For
years I only paid $202/yr. for full coverage on a Kawi Cocours, I
thought that was cheap. In about 2000 they raised it to $225, still
cheap. When I traided the Concours for the 2002 KLR650 they raised
it to about $245, still not bad. In Nov. 2003 I moved to Kingman, AZ
& called them about the change & I was told the same coverage would
now cost about $550/yr.! Their explanation was that it is just what
they charge in the area because of past claims. I shopped around &
now have Progresive at $355/yr. I just tried the www.bike-line.com
(Merkle Ins.) that Zachariah suggested & they wanted $593/yr. (I have
high coverage, $100000-$300000, etc.). So basically you just need to
do a lot of calling around till you find the lowest cost. Have fun.

I went through Allstate and got RV insurance on the '05 KLR. Offroad
premiums but I'm still covered for on-road use with basic coverages
including collision. $210.00 annually.

Haven't seen much discussion of insurance on the board before.
Maybe it's too personal or boring, but I'm curious what most
dualsport riders do for insurance. When I got back into riding last
year after a 15 year layoff, I just called my auto and home insurer
( American Family) and asked for liability only coverage on my 03
KLR. As I'll need to renew before next season, I'm wondering if i
should add collision or any sort of additional disability
insurance. All my life I've paid cash for vehicles and only carried
the minimum of insurance on them, but now that I'm getting
older and due to the inherent danger of motorcycling, I'm
wondering if i should start carrying a fatter policy. Any thoughts?
I'd also be interested in any good or bad experience anyone ha
s had with their insurance company. For instance, I've yet to hear
a happy story about settilimg a claim with All State. I'm
wondering if I'd be better off moving my motorcycle coverage
elsewhere. Thanks.
