nklr performance upgrades - just to make noise

What is wrong with riding on a bike that "sounds like a sewing machine?" (although the KLR doesn't sound like that at all, of course). I am really curious about the point of all the noise. Excess noise from a motorcycle is proven NOT to enhance your "manhood", make you more attractive, thinner, stop balding, taller, shorter, a better lover, or fix anything else you don't like about yourself. It is guaranteed to annoy people to the point of PASSING LEGISLATION to prevent it. From reading this list, it seems a lot of people lean toward the Libertarian side of things. Loud pipes just give the government another excuse to legislate the lives of citizens. And good for them, since it seems like we are unable to do it for ourselves, unable to take responsibility for us and those of us we live with. Honestly, it reflects terribly on those of us who ride because we enjoy it. It is a motorcycle, a tool to get you from point A to point B, not some unalienable right to pollute everything within a 1/2 mile radius with physically painful noise. Is that a difficult concept? Sorry for the rant, but I am tired of all this crap, the "I have the right to do this, the right to do that". No. You don't. You have the right to respect the lives of the free citizens around you, the right to act civilized, the right to act like a human being. oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo I have the right to modify my bike so that I enjoy riding it and to do that I do not have to make it obnoxiously loud. The sound of a motorcycle may not be important to you, but it is important to me. As I've mentioned before, I don't like obnoxiously loud pipes either. The stock KLR pipe does make some noise as you point out. Maybe you and Don S. should completely weld up your stock exhausts and really be satisfied. lol, Yeah, that is a ridiculous statement, but no more ridiculous than your inability to understand that an exhaust does not have to be obnoxiously loud to sound good. ed A17

I don't understand how it seems today around town you can run any pipe you want. Custom bike guys love to rattle the window panes of the local downtown area in the little suburban town I live in while you are out sipping a mocha or a glass of Cabernet at the sidewalk cafes. They would not of got by with it back in my day ......Sonny ... by cracky. The town I grew up in had an excessive noise law and would give you a ticket. I know, I got one on my Vespa as I had completely removed the muffler. I got one on my 56 Ford with glass packs and my brother had scavenger pipes (straight pipes) on his 50 Merc. We were not alone. It was a common ticket back then. What gives now when it seems you can run whatever you want? Criswell

Yep. I got one of those myself with a completely stock exhaust system on my '64 Chevy. It had a minor leak develop at the manifold and I got nailed with a 50 dollar citation when I could least afford it. The kicker is that I had the gasket on the seat beside me and was coming home from the parts store. My neighbors and co workers have all commented how quiet my bikes are. The only thing I hear as I ride out of sight is the wind in my face and the howling of the D606's. Loud tires save lives. Ken

I ran a set of IRC 110's and when I would lean into a curve and they went off the quiet center onto the loud knobs, it would scare me into thinking some truck had snuck up behind me and make me flich untill I got used to them. Andy in SW La. Where there be frost all over the place this morn. Sigh!

I find the K270 howl when the bike is plumb. They quiet down when I lean the bike. Now that they have around three thousand miles on them, they're quieter. Dear Abby, I recently mounted a Supertrapp to my wifes sewing machine. I HAD to find a way to get a little more torque out of it. My problem is that my neibors are now threatening to call the police or worse...they may even stop to talk to us. Loud Stitches Save Lives, Tom, Central IL.

Hello Jud, I'll have to think about this one.... To really add confusion to the discussion, try this on for size/humor: http://www.fftoday.com/articles/davis/mock_on.htm And people tell me they have trouble understanding either of my two maintenance manuals...the one(s) for the KLR and the other one, the life-maintenance manual that is bound in leather. revmaaatin. who knows that like most manuals, the more you read them, the clearer the message becomes...although Mr. William Blake could be the exception.

I really liked how the IRC 110's worked except for that feature. By the time I got used to the howl it was because I had worn them down enough that it pretty much had gone away. On Blake's advice (not the poet) I put on TKC80's and find they work just as well without the noise every time you lean.
