nklr: how to add dsn_klr650 to my yahoo page

Hi all Just wondering what experiences there are with different types of bars on KLR 650's. My '99 has after market steel a little lower and narrower than stock. I've now bent these a couple times, and I think will have to be replaced (along with aligning the forks!!) Is there any reason or advantage to using an aluminum bar. My riding is 50/50% street/dirt but may lean toward street in the future, maybe 75/25%, if this would have any bearing on the decision. Thanks for any input. Canuk on a KLR

Looking for some help with replacement Handlebar?? Seems as if we have bend the stock ones.. Is there any consensus on replacements other than stock at $97. bucks. I don't mind sending the money but if I have to spend a $100. bucks I would like to have a better set of bars. Or is it better to use steel after markets at $25.bucks.. Hi Bill, Got a Road Toad or a Combat Wombat in your collection? Free advice spend the money on a set of Fat Bars, Easton, Renthal, etc. and an adapter kit. Less vibration,a little stronger and looks way cooler! Got a set for my birthday from my son and now I'm getting a set for my new V-Strom. Buddy

I generally have purchased Moose Carbon (steel) Bars in the past for $15. However, aluminum is available for cheap at $36 for the MSR Dominator Bars, which seem increasingly popular and I'll give 'em a try next set I buy. Mark

Can anyone tell me who makes a good set of replacemant handle bars for the klr? Style and model would really help. Pictures would be better. And if anyone bought bars that were a different width,rake or length than stock and liked or disliked them can you help a guy out. My bike fell over while i was in the bank and hit the curb on the way down. I tried to bend back the stock bars and the weld cracked on the cross support. Rob A15

I like the aluminum Renthal bars that Dual-Star sells for the KLR. I have them on my bike and have put them on 4 other KLR's as well with no complaints. I believe they help to reduce vibrations at the grips. I don't know the style or bend, but they are very close to the stock bars. They certainly are stronger. I have gone down twice on the street (lowslides at 40 mph and 25 mph) once in the dirt at about 20 mph (front slid out from under me while going straight and hard on the front brake) and my wife dropped it on it's right side in a parking lot after coming to a stop. No bends or tweaks to the bars at all. MrMoose A8 (Barbie and Ken special)

Changing your handlebars can really change the comfort of your bike! To see what you need, sit on your bike with your eyes closed & both your hands out in a comfortable riding position. Then open your eyes & see where your hands are in relation to the grips. This will guide you in selecting a handlebar bend. I bent my OEM handlebars on a dual sport ride so I also had to replace mine. I'm 5'11" with a 33" sleeve length. The OEM handle bar always felt too wide & a bit far to reach. I replaced my OEM's with a Tag T5 "mini high rise" & find them much more comfortable for extended riding. The bend move the grips in & up about an inch in each direction. This really seems to reduce the strain on my shoulders. The OEM cable length works fine. I've dropped the bike several times & the aluminum handlebars haven't been damaged. Possibly being bit shorter helps in this area. Mine are gunmetal gray, which looks very good. I use a Renthal CR-HI bend aluminum bar. I like it a lot. Bent my stocker putting handguards on: not impressive. A lot of people seem to use Renbthal's Desert bend. I also recently put on a pair of small (17mm) bar risers. Makes the ergos a little better for me: gettin' old I guess. Randy

Check out http://www.rockymountainatv.com They have the Tusk line of aluminum handlebars for around $22.00. They seem as good as your low-end Renthals atless than half the price. The web site also has a page with a chart of bar dimensions so you know what you're getting. I personally like a bar that's narrower than stock and about 1/2" lower. A lot of other riders are the opposite. Mark
