buell ulysses? nklr

Anybody out there have one of these? Sure am drawn to this bike. I know it won't go where a KLR will but sure seems nifty to me. I wonder how many miles that engine will go as Eric has hot rodded it up? I went and looked at them last weekend. That 17 on front sure looks small compared to dirt type bikes. Criswell

At Sturgis I rode the Ulysses and the XB12 Long (I think it was called), which shares the same chassis. The Ulysses was fun, but too tall for me. The frame, which carries oil, was so hot I thought I would blister my ass when I slid a cheek over to put a foot down. The cooling fan ran almost constantly, and sounded like an air raid siren. The XB12 seemed smoother, quieter, and much more refined by comparison. It may be that the Useless (the Buell guys didn't seem to like it much when we called it that) was getting a lot of work on a very hot day, so perhaps I didn't see it in its best light. I would wonder, too, at how long the glorified Sportster powerplant will last. Dunno if it could be my main bike, but if a guy had the disposable income, it would sure be interesting to try one on a long trip off the beaten path.

I liked the idea in the beginning - an air cooled twin dual sport. A real "sportster." Not so thrilled when I saw one up close. Then I decided I really wanted a Triumph powered dual sport but the Scrambler didn't cut it. That is the motor I'd like to see in a real dual sport, something to challenge BMW. I liked the early Tigers alot and almost bought one (long distance internet thing and chickened out). Maybe a Buell City Cross with good tires? I sometime surf for "desert sleds" and get some nice Triumph powered bikes from the 60s and 70s. The new motor is pretty big but with a good design could sure be cool, I think. --- Ronald Criswell wrote:

This bike is full of 2's. too tall too noisy too ugly too harlyish too heavy too expensive and you can buy too klr's for the same money. don a17

I too am really attracted to the Ulysses. I'm a former Cyclone owner. Buells need much more attention than the 'Ol' KLR. The isolators need replaced at 10,000 or so. The top end (just rings if your lucky) at 20-25,000. From what I've read, the Ulysses is a bit de-tuned, which is a good thing. One thing is for sure...They are not an "around town" kinda bike. I foolishly tried to ride mine about 1/8 mile to cruise the local park at less than 20mph with shorts on. I only had the bike a short time and this was the first warm day. After about 10-15min. My right leg was as red as the Buell (the bike was blood red). In my opinion...A Buell is a blue collar Ducati....That runs really hot. As a toy, they are VERY hard to beat. Yeah maybe someday somebody will get this type bike right. The old Triumph twins that people used to desert race (back in the 60's sonny) were what ... about 360/370 pounds and maybe 40 ponies stock. Hmmmmm .... roughly the same statistics of a KLR. But the old Triumph's looked and sounded better. I bet KLR's last better. Oh well .... maybe we are riding the right bike. Criswell
