tank panniers

Post by Conall O'Brien » Sat Feb 10, 2001 10:35 am

I use the standard size Riderwearhouse tank panniers on the KLR and have never noticed the bike running any warmer. If anything it seems the temp gauge reads lower while moving down the road. I was expecting just the opposite, thinking the bike would run hotter with the bags on. It was summer at the time. Conall

tank panniers

I ordered the Aerostitch standard panniers yesterday. I chose them over the Wolfman because of size/price. Wolfman's are 2 liter at $70, Aerostitch are 14 liter at $120 - 7 times the capacity at less than twice the price. I think the Wolfman's are like the ATV bags, I don't think they'll reach far enough to cover the triangle area. I've never heard of any heating problems with them, other than the rider's calves getting toasty. "Swede"

tank panniers

Post by Eric Grundin » Sun May 06, 2001 11:34 pm

Has anyone tried there hand at making a set of tank panniers? I know that Aerostich sells a set and I may break down and go that route butt thought I would ask first. I am getting used to the bike a bit. 1st valve adjust went well thanks to help from the list. Out on the interstate at 75 to 85 mph it seems to get a little shakey sometimes. I am thinking if I can get some weight on the front wheel it might help things a bit, hence the tank panniers. The bike is a lot of fun and I am riding it a lot more than the Connie at this point. In June I will head up thru Mn. to Ontario, then east to Quebec and up to Hudson Bay for a little shake down cruise. I should be able to find some out of the way roads/trails to ride up there. Any way thanks for the help. Eric Grundin Salem, Wi. 99 Concours "Airbike" 01 KLR 650 COG #3728 AMA #75867 Silly Yuppie Trailers are for Boats.

What's the better fit on a KLR - Aerostich's Standard (larger) or Competition (smaller) tank panniers? Thanks.

I have the big ones and they work fine for me. I carry them as far forward as I can get them to give me enough knee clearance. They really work well and I would not want them any smaller. Thanks. I run the larger Aerostitch tank panniers on my 1998 KLR650. They fit perfectly and leave room for my knees (I stand 6'2" tall). I attach the bungee cords to my Moose bash plate. -- Marc, KLR650 A12, Loveland, Colorado, USA

They hang over the tank, I have a set and like them a lot. Look at the CalPosse.com site, under ride reports / Moab 2001 and I think you can see them on my bike. I got the full sized rather than the Competition size and they rule. CA STu

them on and off? Richard, I've seen pictures of the Aerostich units, and they look awfully small compared to the RevPack panniers that I've used forward- mounted on my KLR's for the last 8 years. Not sure if I did it right, but I just uploaded a picture to the "Photos" section - - it shows the RevPacks pretty clearly (and also the excellent Tim Bernard aluminum panniers and top box). Once the installation of the RevPacks is debugged, they are on and off the bike in less than a minute. I think they're great. With a lot of heavy stuff up front in the RevPacks (like tool roll, oil, spares, etc.) the weight of the rear panniers and their contents is completely offset, and the bike again handles like it's on rails. And the front-mounted panniers do offer great weather protection. I think Aerostich is trying to market their tank panniers to all brands and models, whereas probably only the KLR, and maybe a few others, can utilize the RevPacks in this forward-mounted position, dur to the plastic "wings" covering the radiator and coolant tank. With most bikes, the steering would be impaired, but not with the KLR. Bill Woodson in Madison, Wisconsin A13, '98 VTR1000

Look great , Work even better, takes all of 1 minute on and off. Mount them as far forward as possible so knees have room. If you have very long thighs the pannier could be in the way. For the $115 they cost me and the Aerostitch super quality they are are a bargain. Steve G
