<><><><><> <><><><><> Matt, I bought the gaskets so we'd have them on hand if anyone needed one. So far I think we've used one side cover gasket in a dozen or so doohickey changes. Being careful when removing the side covers goes a long way in being able to reuse the gaskets. I've taken 5 minutes to remove a sidecover and gently loosen the gasket so it could be reused. That seems to me to be much easier than cleaning gasket surfaces after tearing a gasket. I just installed one on my 04 looks great!!Color is grat with blk and red model Has anyone tried installing a pair of them as side saddlebags or panniers?? The trunk is very similar(knockoff) to the Givi bags which are used as side or top cases. Please respond off list if possible Thanks Chris

I had purchased one of the newer JC Whitney Medium trunks back in May
when they were redesigned. Well, the mounting plate was plastic and
had to be fixed with some two part plastic epoxy, and the "quick"
release system never worked quite right. So I would be here to
complain about it but....
Friday I was sent the new updated metal baseplate. I had never
complained to JC Whitney about the cheap plastic one. They
apparently just sent everyone who bought the trunk the updated
baseplate. COOL!!
I sent their customer service department a thank you, and also told
them about the trouble with my trunks lack of quick release. They
told me they would extend my warranty, and if I reordered one, they
would send me a new one, and then I could send them the old broken
one. They even covered the shipping for one way. Plus, the person I
dealt with via email in their CS department was absolutely fabulous.
I don't work for JC Whitney or support them in any way, but just
thought you guys (and girls) might want to know about a good
experience I had.

You too!? I was surprised, and delighted. The metal bracket is much
better. No problems to date with the plastic one, but after reading
from one reader how the tabs broke off, I quit letting my daughter ride
with me. Now I don't have to worry about her leaning back and breaking
the retaining tabs off and sending the trunk and her onto the highway!
I never even knew about the new plate, just got an email from them
saying my order had shipped. What order!?, my order was back in May and
complete. I called and they said a new mounting bracket was on the way
to me, didn't say why. Discretion told me to keep my mouth shut and see
what they sent.
I would have been happy had I requested the bracket, but for them to do
it without being asked is even better.

the perfect windshield
I just created it. Just rode in the rain with it. It's quiet, keeps
the wind blast from pushing you around, and keeps enough rain off of
you so that rain doesn't come down your neck.
Oh, how it works:
1. Go to eBay, and buy one of those OEM windshields.
2. Cut the flip off the windshield and put it onto your KLR.
You now have a summer windshield. But what about rainy weather and
winter travel, you ask?
Okay. Now take the windshield that you took off your KLR. Hold it up
to the *front* of your chopped windshield. Using a small drillbit or
nail, mark future holes in your chopped windshield so that you can
mount the OEM windshield a half inch or so below the top of the
chopped one.
Drill holes. Put screws through holes. Put spacers on screws (I used
big nuts). Put windshield on other side of spacer. Put washers and
nuts on other side of windshield.
You now have a gap between the chopped windshield and the OEM
windshield. This helps equalize the pressure between front and back of
your now-taller windshield as well as creates a stream of air up the
back of the windshield as well as the front of the windshield and thus
eliminates the buffeting. You've effectively created a +5 or +6
windshield, but one that is much quieter than the Clearview or the
tall Kawasaki. It isn't as wide, but my experiment of using this in
the rain shows that adequate protection occurs to keep rain from
driving in through the front zipper of your rain gear, which is all I
really care about. You can lean forward and tuck your helmet right at
the top of the higher windshield. Wind blast hits my helmet about
halfway up the visor, just right for blowing off rain.
Another way of doing this would be to take a Clearview or a tall
Kawasaki, and chop them up. The problem is that they are really too
wide for this to be effective. The air coming in around the cutouts
needed to fit the controls causes buffeting from underneath.
