very well could be the best value for twice that. I mounted mine so I could access the tool section in the fender. I carry a heavy toolkit of 10-20bs(large fanny pack) and tube and seals and front tube and electric comp. and MTB hand pump and bulbs and some other odds and ends. Daily commuter. this allows room for a two ppiece rain suit and jeans. I compress and distort the case all the time. Lasted me a whole year. offroading in soft sandy offroads. Busted one tab of the plate while maintenace work was being done. Now I just secure it with two rubber bungie cords. In the future I will remove it (new) while on a stand and allways put a bungie cord over it just to keep vibs down. Every day city commuting it'll last almost as long as klr. The case is solid. Used as a centerstand. lock is less so. mounting plate is ; well lets say it only broke one tab and not split into two halfs like I thought it might being mounted way back on the luggage rack. Have I replaced it yet ? Nope. Paint your bike black and mount this case; people will ask alot if your ride is a BMW ! (REALLY) --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "jiminwaseca" wrote:

Guys w/ the JC W trunk - On several rides guys that used them off-road had to bail out - the latch failed in all three cases. No big deal on the street or mild off road, but when they tried to run with us on BAD washboard the gear inside got to moving up and down with sufficient force to blow the latch. Otherwise the cases looked sturdy ( they didn't make it to the WTF areas of the rides, but the mounts didn't fail to the point of turning back for them - it was only the latch. I expect that a minor fix can be affected to prevent the latch from giving up. Price is right, does well in the rain, and looks good on the A19. Enjoy!

---- the latch is deff the weakest part of the box. i broke mine on a rough rocky section and the box was empty. security is also an issue as i could open mine with my klr key aswell as my buddies klr key. i fixed that buy drilling and installing 2 small eyebolts and now can use a padlock for locking the box. i use a bungee cord to keep my lid closed now since my latcg broke ( unless i have it pad locked ). as far as price goes, ive seen the selling price cheaper on ebay but then they usually rack you for shipping. i think buying it right from JCW is the way to go. i really like the box and i will buy another one someday when i decide i need one that has a working latch. scott --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "jiminwaseca" wrote:

Mine lasted through a pretty good beating last year riding down Baja and then on dirt/rock roads through Copper Canyon up to Creel. Feedback from the list suggested the latch could fail resulting in a jettisoned trunk so I used a bungie to help hold it down and had no problems losing it. However, I did vibrate out both hinge pins (held in place with zip ties for trip duration so a dab of rtv or something similar on both ends of each pin would probably be a good thing. If you get on JC Whitney's mailing list, they have 10% off promotion every month or so. I like having a lockable hard sided case and now have to go out to the garage to find the right size nails to replace those pins before next week's Baja trip. Jeff Jones

If it allows get something longer and bend over each end. Wonder how this latch/key look, almost sound like compartment door locks on a RV, which are cheap. Seems to me a cargo net over the whole thing would look good and keep it from moving around, plus if needed the net can be used to tie down other gear. I know someday I will order one too. Hey everyone, I finally received my JC Whitney trunk last week and have it mounted. I put it just past my tool kit so that I could keep it where it is. It looks pretty good. The new trunks seem to look more like the GIVI trunks that I have seen. It even has a small built in backrest. This is the medium flat black trunk in case you were wondering. Let me know if you want to see a pic and I'll try to take one and post it.(OK, I'll probably have to ask my wife for help posting the pic, but you get the idea....:-) Anyway, I hope it lasts. I'll keep you posted as to its durability. Also, I was wondering how many of you bought the new gaskets when you did the "Doo"? I am looking at the prices of things, and am curious how many reuse the old ones. Thanks, Matt B 06 GREEN with JC Whitney trunk (just getting uglier by the day:)

The old gaskets still looked good when I removed the case so the new gaskets are still sitting in the box they came in. It's been about 5000 miles since the procedure and no leaks. I did go ahead and replace the flywheel bolt with a new one since I'd already paid for it and the penalty for failure seemed greater than a few drops of oil on the floor.
