dead. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. It'll be awhile before I can let you know what eventually solves the problem (slow worker, multiple projects, all toys with sparkplugs broken at same time). I have a peculiar saddle on my other bike but with some monkey- fingered wrenching, I should be able to get it off and get at the Panasonic battery. I'll try that...or maybe my lawn tractor battery and see what happens to the problem. If that doesn't work, I'll follow the directions for finding and cleaning the contacts on the solenoid. I guess the last step would be pulling the starter and having an auto electric shop test it. I'll be back... JohnD> > I turned on the ignitionon my A12, everything looked bright and > fine. Not that I'd want to discourage anyone--much less my
own father, out from under his technological rock to
post on the internet--from cleaning and checking his
starter solenoid posts... but just for my own clarity
and future problem solving: Does the
lights/accessories end of a KLR's electrical system
care about the starter/ignition end in such a way that
a starter solenoid issue could cause the headlight to
go out??? I would have thought that, so long as the
fuse is good and the ignition is on, if the battery is
on then the lights should light. That little wire
that feeds everything but the starter doesn't care
about whether the starter solenoid(s) are doing their
job, does it?
Just trying to understand so I can avoid bumpstarting
my own beast down some dark and lonely bayou nowhere.
I, for one, vote dying battery if his connections are
good and clean.

Very timely, Luke. You are correct in your suppositions, and the
answer to both questions is no. I was just going to post, in response
to JohnD's last post, that the condition of the connections, at the
starter relay or starter motor, has nothing to do with any other
electrical consumers on an unmodified KLR650. He originally stated
that the lights were good until he hit the starter. Attempting to
engage the starter motor puts a heavy demand on the battery, which
can cause a faulty battery to open up momentarily, therefore taking
the lights down temporarily also. Remember that there is already a 60
some watt load on the battery as soon as the key is turned on on a
stock KLR. So I'm sticking with my original long distance assessment
that he has a bad battery, with the remote possibility of corrosion
between a battery cable and its lug or a weak frame ground.
Confirming that the battery connections through the starter relay to
starter motor, and the starter motor ground, are all clean &
conductive is good preventative maintenance, but I don't see the
condition of these connections as having a bearing on the problem as
he described it.
