I would make energy independence the #1 national priority. I would not consider drilling for more oil to be the long-term solution and I would not support damaging the planet to obtain oil or any other energy source. If this country seriously made energy independence the #1 priority I believe we could quickly eliminate our dependence on foreign energy sources. It would be revolutionary and would radically change the world for the better I believe. -Mike __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! This thinking spells out why I think we can never win this war and our children and ourselves will never again live without the threat of some kind of disaster hanging over our heads. It assumes that our military can defeat this enemy if only we torture more of those who we suspect are. It assumes that our shores will be protected against each and every attempt to poison our water supply, spread a deadly virus among thousands or even millions of people, or detonate a nuclear weapon in one of our cities, if only we torture and abuse more prisoners. It further assumes that we'll win public support among Muslims and decrease the number of those who want to harm us if only we torture and abuse more prisoners. It might even assume the outrageous belief that by torturing and abusing prisoners we'll make Muslim extremists (suicide bombers and alike) afraid of us and our military.

That tradition is a civil one, and war is not a civil matter. And, yes, Congress formally declared war against Al-Quaida, the Taliban, and all others who were involved in 9/11. Even better, since our enemies are not uniformed enemies they are not accorded the Geneva or Hague Conventions, despite the desire by some to extend such to them. See Article 1 of the Hague Convention http://www.yale.edu/lawweb/avalon/lawofwar/hague02.htm> for the insignia requirement. > Dude, next thing you'll be promoting is that Islamic > eye for an eye thing! Mmmm, maybe eye-4-eye is not so bad. I don't believe that the soldiers who have been accused of the rape and murder (referred to as the Mahmudiyah incident ) have been proven guilty in a court of law (hey, that's your preference, right?). What happened to presumed innocent? Where's the decision of the judge and jury? Frankly, I'm much more willing to give the benefit of the doubt to those poor SOB's who've put their lives on the line to protect my butt here at home. Hi Will, Which (or whose) argument offers substantiation for uncontrolled torture? I have read the thread, and do not see anyone suggesting this. Not that I disagree with your statement, only looking for attribution to your premise. It is easy to visualize others in power, and without much if ever, danger of being tortured themselves that exist outside of this thread/forum would easily suggest this. I fully agree with you that torture does not make anyone afraid, it does however, add names to the list of martyrs, and martyrs fuel the flame of resistance. revmaaatin. If it were not for farmers and ranchers planting shelterbelts aka windbreaks, we would not be-in or be-from "the sticks" On the other hand, we do have an average of 16+mph wind. My first thought after 911, if I were a terrorist,
with a bunch of suicide ready guys, would have been to
send 10 guys with machine guns to 10 malls spread all
over the US. Sticking with planes is stupid. Strike
were people live, make people afraid to go to the mall
- ie afraid to leave the house. Low tech, simple,
leads to HSA screeners at every mall in America, and a
lock down on guns. If you're willing to play their
game that is.
You can't be totally safe when people are willing to
die for their cause. Better to find a way to make the
world a good, fair place for all.

But Tom Clancy beat you to the novel with "The Teeth of the Tiger".
In an interview shortly after 9/11, he said that his publisher told him that
if he had written a plot like what happened with the WTC towers, he would
have been told that the story line was so far out as to be totally
unbelievable.

Will, I carefully re-read my comments and can't find anything that even hints at advocating torture. (It sounds like the Rev. couldn't find anything, either.) And, frankly, our enemy has no concept of the Geneva or Hague conventions. They love to capture civilians, torture them for a few days, then behead them on film to promote their "glorious war." They love to hide behind women and children as they fire their rockets, then line up the bodies of their human shields as they parade an obliging press around, crying "woe is me! my dear wife who did nothing was murdered by those horrible, out of control soldiers!" They love to slaughter school children (Russia), commuters on trains on their way to work (Spain), diners at a sidewalk cafe (Israel), farmers in the fields (Philippines), ad nauseam. Conversely, our prisoners get three hots and a cot, regular exercise, prayer as often as they wish, and guards who have gone through extensive sensitivity training so as to not offend the prisoners' sensibilities (proper handling of a Koran, etc.). They get the best medical care in the world, and most have gained significant weight and are in better health than at any other time in their lives. I believe it is extremely dangerous to believe that we can just "be nice" and the problem will go away. It won't. They hate us because we treat our women with respect and we have comparatively lavish lifestyles. They hate us because we don't believe in God exactly the way they do, and they believe that they must either convert us or kill us. Everything else is pretense. Heck, Suunis and Shiites, who ostensibly worship the same God and follow the same Prophet, are busy calling each other infidels and killing each other. They can't tolerate minute differences in interpretation of the same religion; how could Jews and Gentiles (or Buddhists, atheists, etc.) ever survive in such an environment? Well, enough political stuff from me that most probably are sick of hearing anyway.> This thinking spells out why I think we can never win this war and > our children and ourselves will never again live without the threat > of some kind of disaster hanging over our heads. This is why you shouldn't discuss politics or religion on an email list
not dedicated to either subject. These attacks are just getting too
personal for my taste.

I agree with Matt. We may all be KLR owners, but aside from that we're
all kinds of people here. Discussion of politics and religion amongst a
diverse group of people is a good way to divide and disperse that
group.
Let's keep that stuff outta here.
