brian and others.... what sprocket sizes?
'00 KLR650, what sprocket sizes do you run. I have stock 15/43, and
my trail crawling is WAAAAAYYYYYY too fast.
I need to slow it down.
What do you all run?

Hi Keith,
Good to hear from you again. I run a 14 front with the stock 43 on
the rear. I use that setup for everything. It really helps off-road
and took my top comfortable highway cruising speed down about 5 mph
(75-70).

A 14/43 and you can go 70-75mph? My 2006 has the standard 15/43 and
screems at 4,000 rpm at only 60mph! I am switching to a 15/35 for 75mph
@ 4,000rpm.
Did Kawasaki use differing gear trans gear ratios in the past?
I ride mainly long distances on the street and needed to tone the rpm
at highway speeds to squelch some of the bar vibes and increase engine
life.

Would a 15T/45T setup require the stock chain to be lengthened? It
sounds like you been down "all of these roads" before.

I do mainly off road riding so I geared down accordingly. I run a
14/47
combo from JTSprockets for daily and off road riding. When I need to
make
runs on the interstate, I change the front sprocket to a 16. I did
have to
get a longer chain, 110 links.

Same here. For everyday stuff, the 14t is fun but I keep a 16 for
prolonged interstate travel. I also bought a 13 tooth from Fred for
the dirty stuff but I've not used it yet.
As a point of safety, it seems to me that the 14 tooth has caused
fewer parking lot, 1 mph, u turn stalls which can dump you in front
of all your bubba and bubbett friends. It's easy to do on a big thumper.

I'm one of the few members who likes taller-than-standard gearing on the KLR, and run 16/43 daily and find it very pleasant. Being one who has a lot of experience with tall gearing on a number of vehicles, I would opine that 15/35 is just toooooo tall for the KLR. My 16/43 is the same as having 15 front, 40.3 in the rear if you will. I find I don't even use 5th gear in some town situations, (ie below 40 mph on totally flat ground, or for any moderate acceleration below 50) - remember this is a single where 75% of the time it's decelerating, then BOOM, 25% accelerating (ie, 4-stroke cycle). You'll get into chain snatch issues. You have to be wise about when, and when not to use top gear.
That said, I would agree that you could cut that rear 43 down to a 40 or 39 on the street comfortably, but 35? Off -the-charts too far IMO.

On your rear brake lever:
add a piece ON TOP of the tip. I use a piece of ski-pole while a buddy used wood, around
5/8". Mine's attached with a zip-tie thru lateral holes thru the middle of the side and down
around the tip.
