confused about oil change intervals

Post by Yan » Mon Aug 07, 2006 8:51 pm

i have a 2006 KLR and my owner's manual tells me to change oil and filter every 10,000 km (that would be around 6,000 miles). Clymer service manual says different - change oil every 5,000 km (3,000 miles) and filter every other oil change. Who to trust? What does your owner manual says? Thanks.

I vote for 3,000 miles on a thumper. Oil and filters are cheap. don a17

Lot of talk here about going for more like 1500-2000 miles between changes. If lazy, change filter every 2-3 times. Oil change that way takes 10 minutes and $5 worth of oil. Jeff A20 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I agree with Don B. 3000 miles is reasonable and 2.5 quarts of oil is a minimal expense for one of the most important aspects of maintenance. Don S. Don Bittle wrote: I vote for 3,000 miles on a thumper. Oil and filters are cheap. don a17

Oil is cheap...I use Rotella 15-40 Heavy Duty. I change the oil every 2000 miles just because the oil runs both the engine bottom end and the clutch. It makes me feel good and it's so easy to do. Capt. Bob in CT.

I looked at my maintenance sheet and I average about 1500 miles between oil changes. I have over 22,500 miles on my 06 now. I use Mobile one M/C specific oil and the stainless steel oil filter and it seems to do well. I don't mind spending the extra $ for synthetic motor oil.

<><><><><><> <><><><><><> Listers, I'm with Capt. Bob on this. I switched to Rotella 15w/40 a few months ago before De Tour. I've have results from 6 oil analysis and it shows Rotella constantly holding up well. So far I've extended the Oil Change Interval (OCI) to 1,500 smiles and my next analysis will be at 1,750 smiles. It is still a 40w and I put a few tough miles on the most recent oil sample. When I was using Valvoline 10w/40 it was shearing to a 20w in less than 1,000 miles. I contacted KHI a few years ago when I read the owners manual (for a 2003) and it said the same interval previously questioned. They told me it was incorrect and they weren't going to correct it. Because this oil compartment contains three tough venues I doubt I'll ever intentionally go over 2,000 smiles on an oil change. I do often extend filter changes to as much as 5,000 miles. My most recent filter examination shows some small metal flakes but it looks about the same as every filter element I examine sans the first two filters. Those had huge pieces of metal in the filter element. Cleaning the oil screen may have contributed to the reduced particle capture for all the later filters. mint 03 klr 650 for sale

Hey guys, It was a tough decision to make, but my 2003 KLR 650 is for sale. You can see it on e-bay. In my opinion, the 2003 was the best looking colour and graphic year Kawasaki ever came out with. This bike is mint. I've never ridden it off road. It was simply my commute to work. You'll be hard pressed to find a spec of dirt on this bike. If I'm not riding it, it's indoors. It's never even been out in the rain. I hope someone will give it a good home. This green machine is ready to go. Check it out on ebay if you're interested, and feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Thanks guys, Ride safe, Jason --------------------------------- All new Yahoo! Depends what oil and how much you ride :-). I use Rotella 15w40 on the KLR but I use Mobil 1 5w40 on the R6. I usually change every 2-3k miles on my R6 and haven't ridden my KLR enough to do an oil change yet but will change it at 3k miles. I don't think it would hurt running to 5k miles but my comfort level is at 3k so that's when I change it. -Bobby
