With the bike in neutral, the starter only turns as I begin to pull the clutch in, not when it is out, nor when it is in. My sidestand switch has been disconnected. I recently replaced my starter switch. What is going on? gillwrig@...

Hi, I've got a KLR650 with 4200 kms on the clock. Recently I have started experiencing intermittent starting problems. You push the electric start button and absolutely nothing happens. It does not happen every time, but when it does, you miss the good old kickstarter backup, which this bike doesn't have anymore! I assume it is a poor connection somewhere, but I don'r have a manual, so where should I start looking? Often it helps to give the handlebars a good shake - it often starts after that! Abri

Abri I'd start by checking the wiring from the starter button on back. The description is consistent with the idea that the solder joint between the wire and the button is cracking, or something along those lines, which would also include the idea of a loose connector. It is probably the clutch interlock switch, notorius for causing this problem. You can get a bypass from TotallyWiredCycles or it is possible to do it yourself. Pretty sure Michael has this one covered. To quickly determine if the clutch switch is the problem, you can do what I have been doin, once every week or so for a while. Pull the clutch in after it doesn't start and let it snap back. It'll probably start right up. I'll get to the clutch switch adjustment sooner or later, I guess. It just seems so easy to pull the clutch in and release it quick! Rod,,the lazy bastard

Abri, I would check out the clutch switch first. My A9 had a similar issue. I could shake the bars or rapidly pull the clutch lever in/out several times and it would start. If you still have the "safeties" hooked up, I would check those first, as someone has mentioned. I too have seen someone's bike be hard to start occasionally and when I pulled in the clutch lever and let it SNAP back relaxed, which jars it into position, it would work again. My opinion for anyone wanting to get rid of these annoying little problems that can pop up at anytime is to get rid of both safeties and the safety relay. I had this exact same problem with the 2 safeties disabled, but it was my safety RELAY that was the next weak link that I got rid of. No starting hiccups what so ever in the last 25,000 miles now. If you already did that, and you are having problems with the start button not engaging sometimes, look underneath the start button assembly and you will see a very small hole, in the button itself if I recall correctly. It's just big enough to shoot some WD-40 up in there with the small red tube that they always come with, which will wash out any dust and debris, make a better contact, lube things up a bit, and displace any water in there and protect it from water in the future. Ya, the battery cables and the connection of the starter switch wiring where it plugs into the main harness. I had mine somehow come loose once such that the bike would only start if the handlebars were turned to the right. Also, check your relays. One of my KLRs currently has a relay that is stubborn on occasion (about 20% of the time). Also note that if the clutch safety is disabled, it gives the ability to start the bike in gear, say..... headed up a hill and you stall, you can leave the bike in first gear, grab the clutch and start it, or at a stop light if you stall, without this bypass, you must find "N". I used 2 .187" spade connectors and did it at the 6 (or 8) way plug by using the small jumper wire I made.
