I just purchased a 2001 KLR650. I've already put 2K miles on it (in 2 weeks!!) I'm looking into things to improve our high speed road manners. I already dropped 3 teeth off the rear sprocket. It's a bit squirly at road speeds. I've been playing with rear shock settings. preload 1, Rebound II seems to work, but the front end is still "light" and wants to speed wobble a bit How much does that "happy trails" brace work? has anyone figured out a steering stabilizer? anyone know what Kawi changed for 2001? Anyone have ?'s about a 2001? I'm planning to upgrade the exhaust system ASAP. I want to improved performance & weight, but I'm not willing to sacrifice "stealth" if anyone can recomend a quiet aftermarket system, with Db specs, I would appreciate it. Enough for now.. Thank you for your wisdom.

I`m 53 and havn`t had a bike since 1986 after owning many different ones.So a couple days ago after a little research I got a 2001 KLR 650. After 80 miles on the odometer I think I can live with it. Any suggestions or opinions or anything I should know as a new owner of the kawa. By the way, what`s the most miles any one has gotten on the KLR? Was wondering about durability and longtivity. Thanks for any replys. Walker

Congratulations on the new KLR. Tom, one of the long-time members of this list has nearly 100,000 miles on his KLR. My 1998 KLR has almost 58,000, and there are plenty of other durable KLR examples. As far as the other suggestions - check the archives/files list, as well as dualsport.org. Stuart

I'm new to the list, this is my first post. Bought new, a 2002 klr 650 (A16?) and I'm breaking it in per mfg. guide lines. My question is, is this what I should be doing or are there other thoughts on the matter? Currently 543 miles. I did 90 miles this morning, man this bike is alot of fun. Welcome to the list. I got my KLR (A15) new in May. I did the break-in according to the manual, 4000rpm redline until 500mi, then 6000rpm until 1000. No problems at all, 7900mi so far. Devon A15 mark hanke wrote:

I am picking up my 2002 KLR 650 tomorrow morning. I actually got to watch the mechanic take it out of the crate and put most of it together. The question I have for the list is about my first round of mods. My riding will be 80% asphalt, 15% forest service/fireroads, (usually with a passenger), and maybe 5% jeep trails. I don't expect any long trips this first year. My focus is on reliability on the oregon backroads. As soon as I have the bike in hand, I plan on ordering a shift lever, skid plate, radiator guard, and master cylinder guard. After my bank account recovers, and I am more familiar with my bike, I would be ready for a second round of mods, probably including brakelines and some bags... Relying on the vast experience of the list, and taking into account the type of riding I plan on for the first year, would there be better choices for the first round of ordering? I plan on placing the order tomorrow afternoon, as soon as the bike is in the garage. Thanks for any help, Tom

Just picked up a 02 KLR 650 today. I am looking forward to getting out and riding. Hopefully our crappy weather will clear up soon as the Liar's club has forecasted. Congrats on the new bike! But I see, KLR's are not new to you. :)

I just picked up my KL650A6F yesterday afternoon. The rapidly rising price of gas with no end in sight was the deciding factor. The Dodge Ram w/hemi is a money pit on fuel cost. I can pay for the bike, insurance and fuel for less than fuel for the truck. The fun is gravy. I received a Kawasaki Assembly and Check list from my dealer. It say's they checked all fasteners per Manual. I rode home the 30 miles and completed the flap to protect the shock as my first upgrade. Thanks to DSN_KLR650 group. I will spend most, some, a little time today checking fasteners before I head out. Jimmy Spring, TX.

Ack!!! It is too late for you. The addiction has most likely set in deep already. P.S. Enjoy the bike. (As if there was another option) P.P.S. Don't worry too much about the doohicky and other sillyness that we hem and haw about. Sure, it is fine to change it (I did), but you can just ride the thing and enjoy for a long time before you really need to worry. -- Doug Herr doug@...
