brake noise

Post by lippetd » Wed Jun 28, 2006 1:37 pm

My 650 sits in the sun at work, and on hot afternoons when I ride home, my brakes make a harmonic hum-low squeal noise that becomes a terrible high squeal right as the bike stops. The front brake is worse, but the back does it also. This last for about 2 miles (4 stops or so). This never happens in the cool of the morning, and rarely if I use the brakes heavily on warm days. I have about 8K on the all original brakes. Is it just time for new pads, or is this a common KLR issue? Tom

brake noise

Post by James W. Flower » Wed Jun 28, 2006 6:33 pm

In a979 the rear on my SR500 started squealing. I bought a spray can of Permatex Brake Quiet and followed the directions (except I didn't buy their brand parts cleaner before I sprayed the Brake Quiet on the back of the pucks). It worked, and it worked for a long time. Now my '99 KLR's rear is doing it too, so I just bought another can. --JWF

If there are any local KLR riders living in the Corona, CA area that know of a good shop to have my initial (first time actually, 1000mi) tuneup as well as make some adjustments to bent handlebars and broken off choke lever, please inform. I contacted Corona Motorsports and they quoted me at just under $300 for the tuneup alone. Is this normal?
