nklr: tire changes
Well I finally got around to mounting/balancing my new MAXXIS C6006s
this weekend. Let me start by saying that I've NEVER chnaged a tube-
type tire before. After reviewing the famous "Jay's Video", I felt
pretty confident that I'd have the job done in at most a couple of
hours. After dismounting/mounting the front tire, I came to the
realization that I pinched the tube. This was obvious when I
couldn't get the tire to seat properly. So after re-doing the front
and balancing it, I was a solid 4 hours into the project. Next came
the rear tire. I had it off the bike and dismounted within 10
minutes or so, next came the hard part. After mounting one side, I
just couldn't get the darn HD tube installed with the valve sticking
straight through the hole. After I finally got the tube seated
properly, The second side of the tire just did NOT want to go on the
rim. Two hours later it was back on the bike... I must say the doo-
hickey was a much faster and enjoyable project than mounting tires.
For tools I had 3 tire levers two 9-inch and one longer one that I
had purchased from Fred. So with that experience behind me, I've
decided that I needed to look for an easier way to mount new tires
in the future.
It just so happens that Harbor freight is having an awesone sale on
their portable tire changer for only $34.99, then the motorcycle
attachment is another $49.99, but I also used a coupon (CODE=868-396-
383), that gave me another $5 off and a free duffel bag. I'mhoping
that with this setup I will be able to change my tires in under an
hour next time.
BTW: The Maxxis c6006 tires seem awesome compared to the stock tires
that had ~3700 miles. I took it on about a ~15 mile break-in ride
on road and through some sand as well. They handled everything quite
well.
I also broke in my Clymer manual properly with some knuckle blood
smeared on the cover. I also found the Clymer manual more helpful
than the video.
