klr650 * backfires* thanks

Hello everyone, After work I started up the beast no problem, got to the highway and ran fine 70-80 mph. Pulled of the main drag to hit a small dirt road and all Hell broke loose. It died again and there in the middle of no where!!! I drain the carb bowl and it looked fine the gas that came out. Crank it up and sounded good so off to the house, as Im going to down the alley it starts backfireing and sputtering, pull up into the garage and first thing was the gas tank it coming off . I'm dumping the gas. Has wife go to 7-eleven and pickup some gas. Empty carb bowl again, filled up with fresh gas, after a few cranks, she burst to life. Then it was way to much idle about 4000rpm-5000 rpm. so I shit it down, did a little adjustment on the adj screw, crank up again, work fine. This tells me that even though you by gas at EXXON it still could be filled with water or nasties. Thanks for all your help. greg --------------------------------- How low will we go? This reminded me that some listers might not know that it is poor practice to fuel up while, or immediately after a fuel tanker has delivered fuel to a service station's tanks. The problem is that service station fuel tanks will always have a deposit of water, dirt and other debris at the bottom. The tanker will deliver a large flow of fuel into the tank which will stir up this stuff which can be picked up and delivered to your vehicle by the dispensing pump. It is simply amazing to see the amount of black water which we have drained from a car's fuel tank! I have seen a 15 gallon tank with more than 10 gallons of water! It may be possible that this was the source of your "gift". FWIW Norm

Maybe you got some of the gas made from the oil recovered from the Exxon Valdese. Did any ducks or sea otters fall out of your tank when you dumped it?
