Rarely seen, in fact, never saw it at all, but when I rolled the throttle off to idle (simulating an engine failure) at 4000ft MSL, I knew immediately if it was working, in this case, working = disengaged. The disengaged Sprague clutch allows the induced air-flow (upward) through the rotors which pushes the rotor RPM back to 85-107% of design RPM. Otherwise, with the engine at 'idle', and if the Sprague clutch remains engaged, induced air- flow downward bleeds the RPM down and the engine would only push the helo rotors at 65% RPM, which by the way, is 20% less than enough to do an autorotation, or remain in control of the aircraft. Rolling the throttle to idle, collective full down, the Sprague clutch disengages; allowing the rotor to free wheel and the helo continues to fly in an emergency procedure or maneuver called an autorotation. If it all works as advertised, I am a 'pilot'... if it does not work, I become a passenger (aka talking baggage) with too much time on my hands. I have played the part of talking baggage once, didn't much care for it. I like my seldom seen Sprague clutch, and hope, it likes me on the day that I need it. By the way, what is the definition of an Emergency Procedure? A procedure to keep the pilot's hands and feet busy while the aircraft tries to decide the location of the accident scene. revmaaatin. if you have the choice between riding an aircraft to an accident scene, or being beaten with a stick, take the stick.
