Could be the timing advanced too far as well. Y'know,
come to think of it, after reading this and a couple
other KLR forums for the last couple of months, I have
yet to see any posts about ignition timing. Does it
never come up?

Almost never, unless you took something apart and did something really weird. The CDI ignition (magneto with solid-state advance and no points) isn't adjustable beyond wiggling the stator a few degrees on its mounting bolts, or getting creative with shaving the woodruff key and mounting the rotor differently. In regular service, it just works (knock on wood) without any attention beyond keeping the electrical connections clean and occasionally changing the spark plug. Good to know reliability wise. But that means there's probably no way to check the full advance timing is there? So if his CDI unit suddenly starts advancing the timing too much too soon, the only way to know for sure is to replace it? I forget who the original poster is, but if you're still listening, have you looked at the color/condition of the sparkplug yet? What you don't want to see is a white, blistered insulator with pepper -like specs on it. ________________________________________________________________> Jerry Pommer wrote: > > >Could be the timing advanced too far as well. > Y'know, > >come to think of it, after reading this and a > couple > >other KLR forums for the last couple of months, I > have > >yet to see any posts about ignition timing. i,m the original poster, here is some more information, the valves
were checked 3000k ago everything fine.Pilot screw out 2 1/2
turns, spark plug was in great condition, changed anyway, still pings.
Whats up?

From what (little) I know about CDIs, this isn't really possible. The voltage builds from the high-speed coil as RPMs rise, producing the trigger voltage for the CDI earlier and earlier. This gives you the advance curve, it's "built in" to the winding setup and thyristor trigger voltage. Good because it's very reliable, bad because it's nearly unadjustable.>So if his CDI unit suddenly starts advancing >the timing too much too soon, the only way to know for >sure is to replace it?
I would look for a cooling problem, double-check settings in the carb, etc.. I was wondering what fuel grade everyone uses. I have an 03
with 9000 miles and it's always pinged on regular 89 octane. I've
turned the pilot out two turns and though this helped with the low
end and starting it still pings under full and sometimes 1/2 throttle
except when I use premium 92 octane. Also I adjusted the valves to
the upper limits. Whats the best way to richen up the upper end, and
should I use stock parts or a dynojet kit (expensive)?
Thanks,
Patrick in Seattle

Mine's always done that.
I've got an 03, and just figured since many said there's ran well on
low anti knock stuff, the timing must be set up hotter on mine.
I like the 14.9 quarter time so I ain't Biatchin!
Rod,,,,,,,thinkin how nice it would be to pour water in it and make
it go

Pat, A KLR should be a happy chappy running on 89 octane. I don't think pinging is a sign that the jetting is off as much as it is an indication that the burning of compressed gas/air is not happening in a controlled manner. You might try playing with the heat range/tip length of the spark plug. Been so long since I've had to play with the heat range I forget which way does what but I think in this case you want to try a cooler plug. My A17 is the same, It pings on 89, even after the
pilot screw adjustment. I am getting low 40s mpg.

Pat,
AFAIK, pinging is all about how fast the fuel detonates. Higher
octane fuel burns slower, so you don't get premature detonation, or
pinging. Putting more fuel in there is probably not the answer. You
might have carbon deposits on the piston or head that are taking up
some up the space in your combustion chamber, effectively raising the
compression ratio, which will cause pinging. High octane gas is for
high compression engines. The KLR should run fine on 87, which mine
does at sea level. Not sure how to get rid of carbon except to scrape
it off. There are products that claim to remove it, don't know if
they work or not.
Good luck,
__Arden
