Since my chain is now way past it's useful life, I am looking for some
experienced input on the advantages and/or disadvantages of the X-ring
chain. I have heard some good things about it and nothing bad, but
would like to hear from someone who has actually used it and has had
experience with it.

Howdy Gorm,
The X-ring is the construction of the seal on the chain and has nothing to
do with it's strength or useful life. In my opinion the top of the line
chain happens to be the DiD VM series chain which uses an X-ring seal and is
also one of the strongest chains on the market. The DiD VM also has side
plates that are plated to resist rusting. DiD also makes several O-ring
chain that have a lower tensile strength and no plating on the side plates.
The X-ring seal offers a lower resistance to flexing so this would have a
more efficient advantage of transferring power to the rear wheel. There are
other brands of chains that also use an X-ring seal. Bike Master has an
X-ring chain for a bargain price and the RK XSO chain is also a mid priced
chain with improved tensile strength.
How's that Hipercharger working out for you?

Hi Fred,
That is exactly the information I was looking for. Since the rear wheel horsepower has now dropped slightly below 100 hp with the Hipercharger, I was looking for less resistance to get the power up where it should be and something strong enough to handle that power.
Thanks again, Gorm

x-ring
I put on a RK X ring chain in the middle of last
summer, about 11k miles ago. I chose it because I
figured the X would be less liklely to get grit and
crap worked between the ring and the plate and
therefore maybe the rings would last a bit longer. I
don't know. The chain hasn't stretched a ton and is
evenly tight/loose, but a lot of the rollers are just
loose on their pins now, which to me means there's
nothing in there grease-wise. My bike sees a lot of
highway and a lot of sand (100 mile highway run to
ride in the pine barrens of NJ all day and then slab
back again is typical) and when the chain was new I
took it to labrador. FYI, I clean it with kerosene
and a toothbrush often and lube with 90 wt. Despite
the fact that the rollers are loose, I feel like it's
put in a good life and it's nowhere near dead, I
expect another 5k+ out of it. I feel like this is
decent life for a chain in that environment. I expect
to buy another this winter.
FWIW, my nighthawk has a DID x-ring with almost 25k on
it and it's like new--almost no stretch, healthy
rollers, evenly tight, etc. but that bike never even
sees gravel, much less sand.
