wiring up a gps
saddle bags
I thought of something last week and a friend of mine said it wouldn`t work? How about ammo can saddle bags? Sort of a poor mans hard bags? I was searching thru the members photos of the luggage section and found a klr with ammo cans for hard bags! dan-iss jpg. I was wondering if it was a good idea? And how hard would it be to mount them? And HOW were they mounted? Looks like a darn good idea to me. I got ammo cans. Cant afford the $1000 givi hard bags. thx

You've struck upon an old solution for a set of poor man's hard bags.
Basically, mount them up just like panniers. Go to www.happy-trails.com to
get an idea as to what the frames want to look like. You need to mount a
bracket that catches the lower frame rail and come up with a way to bolt them
to the upper rail and you have saddle bags.

If you have side racks, mounting the ammo cans is easy. U-bolts
around the tubes is secure and in keeping with the tech level of
your cans. Not a quick-detach solution, however.

For some reason Kawi has changed the design of their saddle bags. The
newer one are much smaller, no where near as much depth to them.
Anyone know where you may be able to get the older deeper design ?
Thanks
Dave
PS .... Excellent new front page photo on the group.

Yeah, also discontinued the saddlebag support bracket.

Dave,
Can't help with the Kawi bags, but if you want some nice big bags try
the ET4000's from Chase-Harper (www.chaseharper.com). They also have
a smaller dual-sport model. I used the ET's for years. Now I prefer
the Alfa Pack from Wolfman.

saddle bags
In my search for some saddlebags, I was dis-heartened by the size and
capacity of the Kawa bags, so I found:
http://www.try-tech.com/bikes/sb_prices.htm
I was pretty impressed with the price, $112.00 shipped, and their
size, so I ordered a set. Received them in two days, and installed
them last night, and they fit perfectly on the KLR with many
adjustment options. I rode to work (22 miles one way) with them this
morning and they didn't move around and never got in my way! They
have 46 liters of total storage and come with rain covers that you
can either put around the bags, or use inside the bag, covering your
gear!
I was a little concerned about not having a saddlebag "shield" for
the muffler, but these things have a huge amount of "heat" protection
incorporated to the inner sides and bottom of the bags. As soon as I
dismounted, this morning, I checked on how hot the muffler side was,
but it was only warm to the touch.
So far, I'm pretty impressed with them.
I'll post some pics of them mounted, tomorrow.

saddle bags
Hi
I am looking into to buy saddle bags, there are two kinds I like to
get, the Wolfman Alfa rear bag, or the one from Kawasaki, do I need
frame to mount on the bike if I want to use these saddle bags?

You don't need any support with the Alfa Seat Bag if you keep this bag full.
The Kawasaki Saddlebags can be used without support too but they will work
better with the Happy Trails OSR racks.
