weight of klr

I'm interested in purchasing a KLR650, but would really like a black bike. Does anyone have a source for the plastic body parts in black or has anyone successfully painted a 650? Thanks, Mike

On my 95 barbie which I painted flat black I had good results with rattle can BULLDOG adhesion promoter found at the local pepboys or autozone stores and industrial "HARDHAT" rattle can enamel. On the air scoops and handquards I used enamel and black spray on bumper paint.One side the enamel and the other bumper trim. Can't see the difference. The front fender will bend and twist with no ill effects on the paint. The enamel resisted gasoline much quicker and seems to resist scratches better and flexes as much as you'd want to bend the plastic. I spent a couple of days inside during a cold N. Fla winter doing this. temps about 50 degrees. I did one or two coats of the bulldog then a coat of paint the a coat of bulldog and paint and then again bulldog and paint. about 3 or 4 cans each. I did notice a weight difference when I hopped back on the bike ! It has resisted all but the most harsh off road get offs. i successfully painted my plastic parts with industrial grade adhesion promoter and acrylic lacquer . i painted mine gloss black except for the gas tank which is a 2003 black tank. if you want to go the cheap route there is a paint called "krylon fusion" that is supposed to be made for plastic. dont know how it holds up or how it looks,but might be worth a look. shawn a15 ohio

Mike, I've painted mine and been pleased with the results after 2 years. I tryed Krylon fusion when it first out. I have some painting experience but no expert by any means. I looked in to several different paints and as usual, tend to over research stuff like this. A good friend and riding buddy pointed out - "it's a dual sport bike - want pretty, buy a Harley. I had made several calls to Krylon. I wanted to clearcoat the paint and my first answer from Krlyon was "sure, it can be clearcoated with any universal clearcoat." I stripped the tank using aircraft stripper, used scotch-brite on the plastic, primed the tank and was ready to paint when I called Krylon again so I could ask about flash time and the best point to clearcoat. This time I was told Fusion could not be clearcoated. Krylon was working on a clearcoat solution, but at that time, could not recommend clearcoating this paint. According to the tech I spoke with this time - the same properties that made Fusion adhere to plastic, caused problems with clearcoat. I spoke with the local automotive paint store rep. and he recommended I try Vaspar universal clearcoat. I painted Fusion on the body parts, wet sanded, and let them sit for a week. I re-coated with Fusion and allowed the paint to flash for 2 hours, applied the decals, then sprayed the clear. Even my "buy a Harley" friend has been impressed at the results. I've had no problems with chipping or flaking. The KLR has been down about 5 times off road and a few stone chips, but the paint has held up well. The only problem area I've had has been the modified hand guards. I forgot about them during prep, and ended up spraying them in Fusion only. There's a small amount of peeling showing up now.
