to lower or not to lower

Post by 4_stroke@comcast.net » Thu Apr 13, 2006 6:50 am

Just got a klr 650...with a Givi box on the back. At first it seemed too high and standing on the ground I could BARELY get on it. Now I stand on the left peg and vault over it. Is this acceptable form? :) Is the peg going to collapse. Can I get some advice from other 30" leg riders? THANKS! [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I've read that lots of riders use the foot peg mounting method with no problems. Personally I find it unstable but thats me. I have a 32" inseam and I prefer the 1 1/2 inch lower links. When I ride off-road, even on a fairly level field, I find myself struggling for stable footing. After picking the bike off myself 3 times (snow riding) I prefer solid footing. The rear suspension bottoms out pretty easily with the stock spring but the ride is nice. I like a little plush in my ride. Perhaps a higher preload. I've set mine on 3 and weigh about 225. Overall I've got about 2 years and 7000 miles on this setup and like it just fine.

<><><><><> <><><><><> 4_stroke, Those pegs are made for standing on. I've seen lots of folks mount the way you're talking about. I think the weak link in that system is the pivot bolt for the side stand. Don't worry about it! With a "bum" right hind leg, young foolish MX racing that is now catching up with me, I have used that procedure for 4 years on 2 different KLRs and not had a problem. Just make sure you lean "into" the bike and get your weight over the center as you mount it, otherwise your sidestand may dig into what ever it is on, but it will not break. I would worry more about the sidestand pivot bending/breaking, but I have done this also even 40 lbs ago, sidestand seems a bit looser than I remember it being new, but works fine sofar. Might consider lowering links if it really bothers you. Bikes seems to have sagged after it was broke in to me anyway, or I got used to it. Dooden A15 Green Ape

Try (and I'm NOT sh*tting you!) getting on from the RIGHT footpeg - put your right foot onto the rear brake pedal, then UP and grab the LEFT grip FOR WEIGHT TRANSFER, and front brake lever ON, then settle down on the seat.I've been doing it since a buddy showed me how. Ed PS As for lowering: I lowered mine 1 1/2" and added a center stand. Due to bottoming in 'dips' which have 'trashed' my footpeg bolts, I plan to go back to stock height and weld appropriate extra pieces in the center and side stands.

the ground I could BARELY get on it. Now I stand on the left peg and vault over it. Is this acceptable form? :) Is the peg going to collapse. Can I get some advice from other 30" leg riders? With my 28" inseam and stiffer, taller suspension, Ihave been tempted, but resisted, preferring to keep the ground clearance. If I were riding someplace like Copper Canyon, with steep roads, heavy luggage, and hazardous traffic, I think I would lower the bike in the name of manageability, but not otherwise.

Yes Is the peg going to collapse. No Can I get some advice from other 30" leg riders? I also have a 30" inseam. I would strongly suggest against lowering the KLR as it changes the ride charactersitics and makes the KLR underside more likely to be damaged by terrain. With the suspension sag set correctly on my A7 it is managable. Jim Texas A7 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I always heard that if you mount your horse from the right it will buck you off so I always mount from the left. Mounting from the rear is also generally frowned upon. kawasaki expandable storage bag

Post by Mike Jones » Fri Apr 14, 2006 8:15 am

Someone asked for a motorcycle storage bag during the last week. I have an expandable motorcycle bag in good condition. This is made by Commercial Sewing for Kawasaki Motor Co. This bag is black and is suited for many types of motorcycles. The bag is appx, 17 X 12 X 6 and expands to appx. 17 X 12 X 10 It's main compartment is very sizable and will hold a lot. It has two side compartments and a mesh velcro compartment. This detachable bag also has 4 straps with plastic clips to easily remove from the motorcycle. It has a carry handle for off bike carrying. The item number is listed on Ebay with item # 4629910327 and closes in two days. --------------------------------- Blab-away for as little as 1 /min. Make PC-to-Phone Calls using Yahoo!
