Calling All Carby Specialists, I'm touring through Africa on my so far reliable '03 and around the time of arriving in Ethiopa it has been running rough in the higher rev range. Starting and 1/4 - 1/3 throttle is OK. After that it is definately lacking in power and feels the same as when it needs to be changed to reserve tank. A lot of missing and great big gaps in the usual smooth power delivery. The plug (less that 1000kms) has carbon build up and there is alot of soot in the Supertrapp exhaust. K&N filter is out (reasonably dirty) and will be cleaned once I can find air. The screen in the airbox looks dirty also, Can this be removed and cleaned? Carb is out and partly disassembled for cleaning. I'm running a N31R needle (any good tips for tuning this?). Addis Ababa is at approx 2200m and apparently a lot of fuel is trucked in from Sudan as there are no reserves here. Someone suggested these to be factors as to why it's running so bad, but I'm not sure if this will account for it running rich. I did have a minor exhaust leak but that has been there for ages, also sounds a little bit like some kind of air leak around the fuel valve/Scottoiler area (rythmic & in time with the engine) Apart from that Addis is cool, literally after the 95-100 degree deserts of Sudan. Most carb have three main circuits. There is the idle circuit that supplies gas at idle and a bit into the 1/4 trottle range. The 1/4 to 3/4 or so circuit and the WOTrottle circuit. Basically there are inside passages and two seats and one or two needles. There could be some pluggage in one of the passages. If the carb wasn't seeing good engine vacuum this would be a problem or if the diaphram on the top of the carb was bad this could be a problem. The needles have two main areas or steps and more fuel will be delivered if the needle raises out of the seat. The carb vent, if plugged could cause problems too. JimmieA.

Cam, I'm no carb expert (sorry), but the bike's likely to run over-rich at high altitudes if you don't re-jet. You might be able to solve or at least reduce the problem by changing the needle position. I hope this helps... -Greg Guithues. envying your journey :)

General consensus is to change it out ASAP. I did four at a doohickey party and all four were just fine. Mileage varied from 4,000 to over 20,000 miles. However all four of us were glad it was done. The doohickey just isn't something you should put off. The other advantage is that it brings you just that much closer to your beloved KLR. Peeking into the inner workings of the machine, fingering the inner parts; out with the bad, in with the good. You'll swear your bike whispers "thanks pal" as you tighten the final case bolts. I got the same feeling from adjusting the valves, another task you WILL become familiar with.
