klr650: is any one year more valuable? better?

Post by hms24601 » Wed Mar 15, 2006 7:46 am

Hello, Can anyone please tell me if any particular year is better, more expensive, or rarer than another. What should I look for in a used bike? Thank you in advance, NEIL

Since the answer will mostly be "no, they are the same", I will give you the important difference. For the first few years the KLR came with a kick start. That is something that would be nice to have as a backup for deep forest trail riding. The trouble is that these bikes are getting pretty old, so I doubt you would be looking at any like this. The one other divider is right around 2001 or 2002 when they started to put them together in Thailand (I think that is where). Some people think this made a difference but most seem to feel that the quality did not really change. I think the bottom line will be to find one in good shape for a price you can deal with. -- Doug Herr doug@...

See the FAQ (www.bigcee.com/klr650faq.html) and go down to the section titled, "How has the KLR650 changed over the years?" In fact, you might want to read the whole FAQ because it is chock full of useful and interesting information. I revisit it every few months and always learn something new. Mike A18

I think a 1995 owned by me is the most valuable year. This was the last year Kaw used the thin cylinder liner, smaller crank, one less clutch plate, and lower electric output. But the barbie paint job has to make it more valuable - why else would kaw use those colors? Greg A9 Michigan

It is not surprising insurance is that high. The Insurance companies know they got you by the $5000 penalty law. Gee, I wonder if they proposed/heavily supported the law? Jeff A20 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Actually it is a little known fact that in 04' Kawasaki scientists working with joint european and american rocket propulsion scientists developed a "special" KLR, in a wind deflecting red color, with a special aerodynamic plastic which makes the 04' far faster and more agile than all other years. The idea was scrapped after 04 so the rest of ya got screwed. This is all well documented fact. --- Michael Silverstein wrote:

Besides the red ones being faster - the insurance is cheaper too... My red one gets better gas mileage...i'm sure of it. Joe

I would sell my bridge cheap with easy payment terms. But my KLR? It's nearly priceless. It was once owned by Ernie, the Keebler Elf. He only sold it to me because he couldn't reach the pegs. My KLR actually stands for Keebler Lff Race. It's been sprinkled with Elfen Magic. It once fell into a pit, fought a hideous creature, and emerged as Gandalf the White KLR. I've been trying to get an Elf-hickey done, but so far, the Keebler umbrella she_elfs haven't been very cooperative. Greg
