I received for a new KLR are in the nieghbourhood $1800 - $2000.
Needless to say I cannot afford that much, and insurance is the only
reason why I cannot afford a bike. Also I might add that the fine for
not having insurance is $5000 in this wonderful province.

I was saying that mostly in jest. The two KLR's I've owned have been
the most trouble free vehicles I've owned.
I do have the doohickey and the subframe bolts on order though, along
with a skid plate. (In fact it was me telling Blake I was going to
install one that prompted his recent inquiry into their effectiveness.)
Then along with the skid plate comes a low profile oil drain plug. Then
Blake asks me what I'm planning on doing for a radiator guard. I guess
if I'm going to crash I'll try and do it on the right side.
