terminal tweety problem
My $.02 on when tweety finally shows up...
Muffler failures are typically moisture-driven (sounds like this is a spot-weld failure), so I've been thinking that the tweety problem shows up earliest in wet climates and on bikes that go on many short trips (water is a by-product of combustion), and shows up latest on bikes in dry climates that get driven on longer consistent trips.
Based on that (I'm in Phoenix and the bike gets two 20 mile rides a day), I'm coming up on 12K miles so far as well with no tweet. I figured this supported the theory.
Andy, go ahead and burst my theory by telling me you live in the Pacific Northwest and ride 1 mile to work.... D'oh!

terminal tweety problem
I was able to buy an KLR ebay muffler this weekend, described as
*only a few miles* for $48.01, delivered.
Now I just need to a Non-OEM muffled KLR to put it on.
As far as tweety is concerned, add good earplugs to your riding gear,
and more right throttle. With those two things added, you should not
hear tweety except at start and finish of the ride.

terminal tweety problem
You guys are lots of help! That's sarcasm, mostly, and honest,
partly. Most of you seem to be saying I should learn to appreciate
it, but that ain't happenin'. I don't mind a "unique" sound, but why
does it have to be THAT unique sound?
So, I did split the top and side seams, and drilled four small holes
in the end cap. For a bit a thought this had fixed it, but no,
Tweety returned, although not as bad (so far).
As for the various theories. My bike has 26K miles on it. I bought
the OEM exhaust off Ebay and put it on at about 18K. It was supposed
to have less than 2000 miles on it, and from the condition, I think
that was correct. I can't remember what part of the country it came
from, though. Anyway, it was Tweety-free for maybe another 2000,
before he/she/it showed up. I live in Colorado (dry), and mostly
ride long rides - probably average ride would be 150 miles, so the
dry climate/long rides = no Tweety theory doesn't really work for
me. And it had gotten to the point that it was present for all
throttle positions except maybe the top 1/4, and I could hear it
even through ear plugs! At least the partial "fix" above has dropped
it back to a more tolerable level.
Alan, I wouldn't mind seeing pics on your Tweety fix, but I doubt
I'm going to go to that extreme - although I did thing about cutting
off the endcap and welding on an extension - don't really know why,
except it just seemed something to change the configuration might
get rid of it.
I wouldn't mind another aftermarket exhaust, if I could be pretty
sure it would last at least 20K, but from what I've heard/read, most
of them don't.
Anyway, thanks for all the input. Guess I'll just live with it for
now.
