The owners manual says to clean with a high flash point solvent and then saturate with 10W40 oil. Questions: 1) What are some brand names of "high flash point" solvent you use? 2) How do you do maintenance of the air cleaner on long trips? I don't want to carry a container of solvent and a quart of oil just to clean my air cleaner. Any and all advice would be appreciated. I am a new owner of a 2001 KLR. Thanks in advance.

t2dennsal; Any brand of gasoline woud be a great solvent for the firs pass. Use about 2 cups in a pail. Make sure you do this outside... I use gas for the first pass. Then I use a regular detergent (the stuff you wash your clothes in) in hot water if I want to get it really clean. Let the sponge soak in that for 1/2 hour or longer. Rinse well, shake dry, and stick that baby back in the bike. If your long trip is over 3000 miles, or through a lot of dirt, you might want to clean it during your trip. t2dennsa1, I second the No Toil filter and maintenance system. I've used it for a few years and find it very effective. It doesn't take much cleaner, oil or rim grease to maintain a filter. If a few guys on a trip use the No Toil system all filters can be easily maintained in a short amount of time. I cleaned three filters at a KOA campground in Rawlins Wyoming and then in Silver City New Mexico I cleaned two filters. First cleaning was in a kitchen sink. Second cleaning was in a motel bathroom sink. Use disposable gloves to make the cleaning and handling of the filters easier. Petroleum products will not remove the No Toil maintenance system. If you don't have the No Toil cleaner the filter will not get cleaned. With the cleaner it's like magic. No Toil maintenance products are available under three labels, No Toil, Honda or Kawasaki. Same products just different package labels. I use "stoddard solvent", a mech shop all around cleaner. Usually buy 5 gal a clip. Is usually used in solvent tanks. On a trip I carry a clean, dry extra filter in a zip lock. Use engine oil to lube it up and put the dirty one in the zip lock till next cleaning. This worked on the GDR just fine. 1st one packed out and next finished trip. That was about 8K mi total. Lots of it dusty. A high flash point solvent would be something like Varsol, a brand name for mineral spirits. The reason they specifiy high flash point is so you don't blow yourself up while smoking a cigarette and cleaning you air filter. Gasoline works as well if you aren't smoking. I use laundry soap and warm water, rinse and allow to dry, then drop it in a zip lock bag and pour about 1 oz of chain saw bar oil (sticky stuff) on it and work the oil in, squeeze excess out and put back on frame and install. Of course while drying I clean out the air box, including the bottom vent tube, have pulled leaves, mud, sand and sticks outta mine. Dooden A15 Green Ape

Kerosene (or diesel fuel) is probably what they have in mind. It's what I use, and it's good for all kinds of parts and chain cleaning. Much safer fume- and flame-, and skin contact-wise than paint thinner or gasoline. __Arden

Wash it with dishwashing soap in a sink you don't care tremendously for (ie, hotel or gas station) and let it dry, then toss it in a plastic bag with some motor oil and squeeze it around. Squeeze out the excess then install. I believe real filter oil is better, but a lot of folks have used motor oil for a lot of miles, and it's hard to believe doing it now and again (ie, on a long trip) is going to hurt too much. If you're not carrying dish soap, you could probably use single serving laundry detergent, available from vending machines at a laundromat wherever you're stopped. -Luke __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I am using mermite miltary food cans for my saddle cans. I mounted them to a HT SU rack. They are pretty big/wide but I like them. I haven't tested them out on a long trip yet, but I can carry $100 worth of groceries & beer between those and my JC whitney trunk One thing I will say is that they are a major pain the the arse to convert from coolers to luggage. They come with an aluminum liner and about 2" worth of hard foam insulation all the way around the interior. Takes some major elbow grease to pry, scrape, and cuss that stuff out.
