klr685 dyno results

Yesterday I had my KLR685 dynoed. The bike is stock with the exception of the new JE forged piston and the resultant 1 mm overbore. The dyno results were consistent with what my seat-of-the-pants dyno has been telling me for the last 1500 miles: power is noticeably improved but still not quite enough to challenge Hayabusas on the racetrack :-) Bike has stock exhaust and jetting except the needle has been shimmed .020 and the screw is set 2 1/2 turns out. I brought a jet kit to the dyno session but it was not used. We were unable to get valid air/fuel numbers since the spark arresting baffles in the exhaust were not letting the exhaust sniffer into the exhaust far enough to get accurate readings. But George, owner of Seattle Cycles and engine tuner extraordinaire, pronounced the bike's jetting "just about perfect" based on how the bike ran so he suggested that playing around with jetting was not likely to improve anything, especially since we were not able to get valid numbers from the tailpipe sniffer. Seattle Cycle graciously offered me the use of their loaner bike while my KLR685 was on the dyno but I decided instead to watch and take pictures. 38.6 hp & 35 ft lb torque? At what rpm? Couldn't quite figure that out on my screen. Did you have oil use before/after? Sounds like you lhad some fun! Glad it worked wel for you John! Mine will be going together this week! It's actually a 685cc kit, which means 102.5mm bore. Stock bore is 100mm. Remember the magic formula pie are square :) times length (50*50)*3.14159*83 = 651cc (51.25*51.25)*3.14159*83=685cc These are available from Schnitz Motorsports, and can only be fit to the 1996 and later KLR650. If you bore the earlier cylinder block to take the later liner and install it, then you can bore the liner and put the big piston in there. Schnitz also has in-house capability for boring and honing, as well as valve work. all the best, Mike

The torque curve is so flat that it makes about 35 ft lbs from 3100 rpm to 5400 RPM. The HP peak is at about 6300 RPM. The HP and torque curves cross at 5300 rpm, exactly where my seat-of-the-pants dyno tells me the bike is very, very happy. You should be able to see all the detail you need on the full size image, double click on the photos to see the graph full-sized. My stock KLR650 engine always used a couple of ounces of oil per 1000 or so miles. But when I cracked the stock piston the oil consumption spiked to one quart per *hundred* miles. Interesting. Does anyone remember a graphic of dyno results on an engine with the stock piston ? I don't recall a torque drop around 5500 RPM or the delivery being so flat. Bogdan

Found it myself. Here's an old post from Marc Issley Clarke. Notice below that the torque does fall slightly at 5500. Bogdan Kawasaki specifies crankshaft numbers not rear wheel numbers.
