I did find it again, the little blurb was in "Cycle World" December 2005
on page 34.
Sure looks like they used a KLR650 gas tank. Just think, if they built
another Rally Twin and used the new Ninja 650 twin engine they would
probably charge over 100,000 dollars.

BTW, HP and torque curves always cross at 5252 rpm

The torque curve is so flat that it makes about 35 ft lbs from 3100 rpm to
5400 RPM. The HP peak is at about 6300 RPM. The HP and torque curves cross at 5300 rpm, exactly where my seat-of-the-pants dyno tells me the bike is
very, very happy. You should be able to see all the detail you need on the
full size image, double click on the photos to see the graph full-sized.
