Ya know, I'm starting to wonder if maybe I should've bought the warranty. OEM shocks seem to puke out their guts before 30k miles, and I have 20k on a bike that's under one year-old. A new shock would pay for the warranty. I'll also blow a fork seal sometime sooner-or-later, and it'd be nice to have Kawi pick up the tab when it happens. RM

If I remember correctly, you can purchase that extended warranty anytime within the first year of ownership (if you bought it new). I really want to learn how to fix the thing myself, but I don't have a clean place to work on it. My garage/shed has a dirt floor and I don't want to be working on a motorcycle while kicking up dirt and dust. I guess I could have spent the $5200 on a cement floor for my garage...yeah right! LOL! I live in San Francisco and don't have access to a workspace or an abundance of tools. Having said that, what do you all think about purchasing the four year extended warranty? Thanks for the help.

Practically every single repair I've had to make was something I broke offroad. In retrospect, if I didn't beat the crap out of the bike doing trail riding, and I didn't tinker, there'd be nothing to do. In 2.5 years and 25,000mi I would have had to check the valves 4 times, change street tires maybe three-four times, change the chain and sprocket once, change coolant once.... All regular service and not covered by warranty either. I don't know how much the extended warranty costs. If you're worried about a serious failure like a blown engine it would be some extra piece of mind. But I'd think for riding in the city, that theft, vandalism, and collision insurance would be a better place to put the money. Devon

Some people have gone over 50,000mi on a late-model motor with a stock doohickey. Some people have opened up a late-model motor with less miles than yours and found broken stuff. The motor runs just fine with a broken doohickey or a broken spring, with no way to tell without opening up the motor. If you don't replace it, you'll probably be fine. 1. I think that Miss Manners would agree that posting in caps just isn't done in polite society. 2. I think an extended warranty is just an overpriced crap insurance policy. Dealer usually has a 100% markup on it. Ask your dealer if he thinks you should have it. If yes, I think you should twist his nipple until he gives it to you for half price. 3. I think you should expect a lot of rebop from the insurer if you ever have to try to collect. They may pay off in the end, brt expect them to look for any excuse to weasel out of paying.

John, I have an extended warranty cause my bike came with it when I bought it used. I wouldn't go out and purchase the warranty but if something really bad happens I suppose I'll be glad I have it. I think you'll be better off spending the money on oil and filters, grease for the links and maybe a coolant and brake fluid change every now and then. A bit of preventative maintenance goes a long way towards reliability.
