tire advise for a newbie!??
Help! I just got a used KLR650. The rear tire is almost gone.
I am new to dualsport bikes (always had a cruiser-> big mistake.)
I am going on a trip NYC- San Antonio- LA- and back to NYC. I would
like a street tire that would handle all these miles. Please recommend
something that would fit the rear 17" and last the longest (for the
money.) Thanks.

Welcome to the fold. two points; first off, you will get 50 different
answers from 50 listeners. Truth is that there really isn't a bad tire out
there. Everything you read and hear about is testimonial from actual users.
You're getting their opinion. I didn't like the Gripster but many riders
love them. I like Kendas. They are pretty good all around. Some riders don't
like them. Rule of thumb; knobbies wear faster than road tread. The bigger
the lug the more noise and worse wear. Traction-wise knobbie types (Kenda
270) are far more grippy on pavement than I would have guessed. But they are
getting noisy and squirmy after about 5000 miles. Expensive European tires
seem to last longer. In some cases lots longer, making them a better choice
from a financial point. Some tires have clear advantages and disadvantages
but even this varies from rider to rider. My second point is that you
obviously haven't found the KLR FAQ. This is the best single source for
information for newbie. This list is pretty good but sometimes the answer is
more perplexing than the question. Have fun. This is an excellent all around
bike. Ride often and ride safe. Oh yeh; the FAQ website, here you go

Yep, ask three guys about tires and you'll get four opinions. I have been using the Pirelli MT90 ST (Scorpion) for the last 30,000 miles or so. They are a good 90/10 street/off-road tire that last very well. Rears have gone about 15,000 miles for me and fronts about twice that long. They cost a little more than some of the others ($148 the pair delivered from southwestmoto) but their cost per mile is in line.

Based on your description of your intended use, you need a mostly
street tire. For primarily street use, like 90/10 street, I am
pleased with Dunlop 607's. They are the same tire the Vstrom uses.

Walter, how do you find the wet traction on the Scorp's? I like the Kendas
(270 front, 671 rear) but the bike is getting sort of squirmy on tight
corners. It may be the 270. The 671 cost me about $55, not the big a
bargain. Wet traction is probably my biggest concern.

Wet traction for the Pirelli MT90 ST is very good. I spent a couple of days and about a thousand miles riding in torential rains and they did an excellent job. Dry traction is damned good, too. Same trip I took them for a couple of passes at Deal's gap. Came up behind a couple of guys on brand new R6s. They finally just waved me on through . . . and this is with enough camping gear on the back to look like the Beverly Hillbillies.

If you keep quality reading materials in there would that qualify as
educational/self improvment time as well?
