traffic light sensors

I have. It did no good. County governments don't feel the need to jump when one motorcyclist tells them to. They have been retro-fitting some intersections with the motion sensors and those work great, so maybe someday this signal will get the treatment. I'm not holding my breath. I hit the light shortly after 6am and either treat it like a stop sign or a car shows up and triggers it while I'm waiting for an opening. During higher traffic hours it's not a problem because there are always cars there. __Arden

klr250 balancer chain tension?

Post by lengosi » Wed Dec 21, 2005 3:43 pm

I've got a growling noise coming from my engine (and, no, it's not the sweet 4-stroke growl!) I've checked the valves and cam chain--both check out fine. My next suspect is the balancer chain. Any ideas what the 250 does for a tensioner? The Kawasaki manuals don't show the fabled 'doohickey' (spring-loaded balancer chain tensionser) of the 600 . . . I don't want to pull the magneto/flywheel if I don't have to!

In my experience where I live, any light never trips for a motorcycle. But ..... my latest strategy that seems to be working is pull up to one of the cuts in the concrete marking the sensor (preferably where they intersect), and put the kickstand down directly on this cut and rev the engine. Works better than anything I have tried. Someone on the list came up with that one. But if you just pull up in the center of the lane and expect the light to change, it won't happen. Oh yeah, don't forget to pull the kickstand up (especially if you disabled the switch) after you get so excited the light actually changed. Or you will have more adventure than you really want. You might want to try wrapping your entire bike in tin foil :-) -----Original Message-----

Virginia DMV has been putting a litle card in with the motorcycle renewals suggesting either reving the engine or shutting it off and starting it. I have a couple of problems with this. It was nice of them to give us a workaround, BUT.... Can you imagine them telling cars that they must shut off the engine and then restart it at every red light? Also, the majority of the lights work when the sensor is tripped (when a car drives onto it). But some are polling sensors, particullarly on small side streets joining main highways. On this type of sensor a pulse of somesort is sent out to check for a vehicle sitting there and if none it does nothing. In order for the gunning or starting to work you would need to do it just as the sensor is polling and, of course there is no way to tell this. If or when I get a ticket for running these lights I will make such a fuss that people will notice. I did contact the engineer at the local VDOT office with a list of lights that would not change for bikes. He informed me that I must not be stopping in the right place as the sensors were sensative enough to b e set off by a bicycle. I offered to meet him at the intersections to show him but he declined. The conversation ended when I made the comment that I refused to carry a bicycle around with me to hold out over the sensor. I can't stand state bureaucrats which is ad since I am one.
