I ride a 2003 klr650 in dutch harbor, alaska. I accidently left the bike idling on the dock for a
couple hours and BOOM! I heard what sounded like a gunshot (or worse, my engine
exploding?)... fortunately it was only my radiator hose blowing out. Now I'm on vacation in
the lower 48 and want to buy some radiator hose but don't know what size (as the bike is still
up in Alaska...) Anybody know what size I need?
Thanks-
Sam

radiator hose pop!
Samuel
Go to www.buykawasaki.com and you can pick the year and make of your bike. The you can look at the parts diagrams and that will give you the information that you will need. You can also go to any Kawasaki dealership and find that information.
Since I work on a variety of different types of bikes and watercraft, I find the parts diagrams on that site to be very valuable.
Hope this helps

radiator hose pop!
thanks Chris, good call... I'll go check out the hoses on the bikes at the dealership
tomorrow. I wonder if I can get a generic hose instead of oem....
thanks again-

radiator hose pop!
Sam,
Glad it wasn't anything more than a radiator hose. Hope it didn't mess
up your thermostat too. I tried to measure the pipe stubs on my water
pump and also the lower radiator stub. I couldn't get a good reading as
the hoses are well placed on my bike. But it looks like it's probably
3/4" hose and will be a tight fit. I suppose it could be 7/8" hose but I
think that would be a loose/sloppy fit. Also looks like you'd need about
3-4 feet of hose to get from the water pump to the cylinder base, the
head to the radiator and the radiator to the water pump. I'm thinking if
anyone knows for sure it'll be Bill Watson who can quote you page,
paragraph and line on the KLR cooling system. He's been working on a
very nice 195 degree stat and by pass over the last 7 months or better.
I would think this would work very nicely for your bike in your cooler
location. You could read more about it if you want at
www.xanga.com/watt_man . I'm thinking on a similar set up for my bike
and Bill's been very helpful sharing his data, thoughts and knowledge.
I'm pretty sure I'm not worthy but it's nice just the same. : )
I saw another lister suggested you get the part numbers for the hoses
from www.buykawasaki.com . I agree with them and think in this
application that's probably the best way to go as the hoses pass very
close to the exhaust system. You could buy hoses mail order from
www.ronayers.com by getting the part number at the buy kaw site and then
putting the part numbers in the ron ayers site. Watch shipping costs as
they are kind of steep for low dollar orders.
Good luck,
Jeff Saline

radiator hose pop!
thanks jeff for all the info. ..Bill's work on the cooling system is pretty interesting; at the
very least it is helping me understand the stock cooling system better.
thanks again to you and this forum-

Sorry I can't help you with the decal, my dirt bike is plated so I've never paid attention. But yes it is worth taking a trail bike, there are fantastic trails all over the area that I wouldn't attempt with a KLR. Taking both would be the best of both worlds. Have fun Steve Who made 2 trips to Moab last year> is it worth while to trailer a non-street-legal trail bike alongside > the KLR to the rally?
