electrex (electrosport) stator

Post by Tony JONES » Mon Dec 05, 2005 8:47 pm

So has anyone any experience of this new version? I believe it's the 3rd revision? I need a new stator and it's a lot less $$$ than OEM. I had a horror story a few years ago where I went thru 4 replacement Electrex regulators (of various types each lasting 50-200 miles) before they claimed it was my bike at which point I went back to OEM and it worked fine. Pretty similar to Svantwuyver's experience with their replacement KLR stator. Fred said he's had no personal experience of Electrex failures and I figure he sells a few. Anyone other than Svantwuyver have any comments? Apparantly they claim it is now compatible with the OEM regulator (contrary to what the FAQ states). I know they have a warranty but it's work to pull the stator (not to mention gaskets) if it fails plus it opens up the nightmare of it toasting my perfectly good OEM regulator. I'm all for giving second chances, but have they got their act together? Tony

I seem to be the only guy on the planet with a full Electrex setup (three year old G45 stator and whatever RR they sold at the time) that still works perfectly. I don't know about their current (no pun intended) stator design, but I do know that the KLR regulator is pin-compatible with certain other Kawi regulators. If you have trouble in the future, you might try checking around on eBay for OEM take-offs. I know the ZR-7's would work, although you might have to remount the unit (I think it's a touch larger). I figured more people would have one of these beasts. Based on the comments it looks like you may be one of the few with a stator, let alone a full setup :-) Do they still require that you cut the wires? Why is that? Are they too cheap to provide a compatible connector or is there some actually good reason? Tony

Tony, The current :) units are plug-n-play, connectors installed. IMO, this may help some of the old issues possibly caused or affected by crimp-on connectors. all the best, Mike Eagle Mfg & Eng since 1990 San Diego, Ca

At the time, you had to splice your own wires. I think the G45 had some non-Kawasaki fitments in addition to the KLR. Electrex was probably trying to keep SKU-sprawl to a minimum. Given the layperson's difficulty in creating bulletproof splices for this critical circuit, I applaud their decision to go plug-n-play. RM References 1. mailto:tony@... I bought a pair of longjohns from these guys and used them on my LA to PHX ride over Thanksgiving--Combined with full leather it was fine. It did get a little chilly near palm springs in the windy valley, but overall for a mild(25-55 degree)ride it was effective. http://www.cdsportswear.com/wf_style3.htm Blaine
