Somehere on the net is a recording of a klr. Can't remember where. Might
help for in the garage or even the living room if the cold stuff continues.
wet here on the Oregon coast. Remember-speed leaves CO behind.

Dig this; wife got tired of hearing me whine about wanting a klr650 so she
just went and bought me one. Had it licensed, insured, ready to go and
delivered a few weeks ago Saturday without even telling me. I was shocked.
Anyway, ever since then, mother nature has decided to crap snow, ice, rain
and cold on top of me at least weekly. Folks around here (North Carolina)
look at you kinda funny when you're riding a bike with snow on the ground
and you're bundled up like you're gonna climb the friggin Matterhorn. So
I've been spending my time buying up little doodads to stick on my new
scooter. JCWhitney trunk, tall windshield, grips, master cylinder
shield...dammit if the weather don't break soon I'm gonna start doing donuts
in the garage. So far 150 miles is all I've been able to get in without
loosing an appendage to frostbite.
Oh well I guess I'll just read the list while I make motor noises and ride
my imaginary "air bike" till the temp climbs outta the 40's. Looking
forward to Spring.
Sincerely,
Jim Hubbard

Hey, she sounds nice. Does she have a sister? I'm only 51, young looking, don't need Viagra. It's warm and sunny here in California. Anxiously awaiting her reply. Oh, I am tall, 6'5", slender, studly, mechanically inclined, and unbelievably handsome.> and cold on top of me at least weekly.

WTF am I doing wrong? I've been whining about wanting an FZ1 now for months and I
just checked in the garage and nothings there. Damn.
Where in NC are you - I'm near Raleigh. I've actually wanted to go out
the last few times it has snowed but my back tire is shot so I'd just
be asking for it - and this last one was all ice anyway.
I think after things thaw out
tomorrow morning it'll be good the rest of the week. Mid 50's with
Friday hitting the 60's! Whoohoo!

I recently bought a 2004 KLR650 and I am about to do the first 500
miles maintenance. I used to ride offroad quite a bit (Suzuki DR125)
but so far I've used the KLR only on the street. I plan to use it
mostly for commuting and the occasional trail ride. So far, I'm
enjoying it quite a bit, though the 4000 RPM limitation hasn't been
much fun (since the local highway speeds are much higher than the 58
mph I'm supposed to be going). Anyway, that's almost over.
Here are my questions...
1. How "hot" should the temperature gauge get? Mine usually runs
about 1/4 to 1/2 scale (50-70F air temperature), though on occasion
it seems to hit about 3/4 scale. The fan does come on, though
usually after I turn the bike off and park it. Then it only runs a
few seconds, then stops.
2. I'm a big fan of K&N filters (more for reduced maintenance than
improved performance). If I install one, do I also have to rejet?
The dealer recommends rejeting to restore the right mixture (he says
that the improved air flow will make the mixture too lean. This
could lead to overheating.) Does that sound right? I do most of my
own maintenance on cars, boats, bikes, etc., so I am not opposed to
doing this, I just wonder if it is really necessary or if they just
want to sell me a kit.
Another note, I also had both my radiator shrouds come flying off at
about 55 mph (the top screws stayed in so they only hit my in the
legs)and I discovered there were no lower bolts holding them on. I
brought it back to the dealer and when he checked his other bike
(still in the crate), it also had no bolts on the lower shrouds. So
much for quality control.
Thanks,
John

man, i got a deal! mine actually had screws on the right shroud. left one was flopping loose like yours. you may want to check for the rubber grommets holding on the sidecovers, my left one was missing. Your experience with your temperature readings sounds exactly
typical. I rejetted to Dyno Jet stage 1, all else stock & I think
mine runs a wee bit cooler due to the richer mixture (Could also be
the infamous placebo effect). I personally don't think simply change
to K&N air filter is going to have a big impact on the air/fuel ratio
but you're probably running very lean already due to the factory
settings.

Ah, the shrouds! Isn't it FUN when they fly up on you at highway speeds!! I still got a zip tie on one of mine, from back in the summer.
Zip ties and duct tape, the two greatest inventions known to man!
