Hello, I recently up a KLR 650 with 440 Original miles on the odometer. Not exactly sure of the year since the bike was produce in May of '98, yet registration lists it as a '99. Bike is basically in showroom condition with the exception of some white corrosion around the lower battery box mount. Unfortunately, the original owner was involved in a severe auto accident while driving his car shortly after purchasing the bike. Because of his injuries he was never able to ride again and after years of storing it, he recently put it up for sale. But, before I looked at the bike the owner or most likely someone else. Replaced the battery, mixed fresh gas with the stale gas in the tank and got the bike running. At first I was hesitant about purchasing it, since it had sat so long without running. But the bike seemed to start right up, didn't blow any smoke, didn't make any strange noises and seemed to shift OK. Since the bike was stored in an indoor storage unit in San Diego. I'm hoping with the mild climate, that no damage was done to the engine from sitting so long without any storage preparation. So I took a chance and bought the bike, to use for commuting and occasional trail riding. So far all I've done with the bike is trucked it to my own storage unit. Currently I don't have time to do anything on the bike till next weekend and didn't want it sitting outside till I get a cover for it. But when I get the time, I feel that the original oil and gas should be replace ASAP before riding it for any distance. As well as change the sparkplug, check the air filter, battery etc. The dealer has recommended using the Yamaha fuel system cleaner on at least the first tank of gas. My first question is since the cleaner is mainly made up of Isopropyl Alcohol, has anyone had any experience using it in a Kawasaki without any problems? Also just curious to know what the preferred brand and weight of motor oil of the group for this bike is? The synthetic racing oil that the dealer has suggested, seems a bit pricey for frequent oil changes. In addition since I must keep the bike outside, has anybody found a motorcycle cover for this bike that fits well? Any suggestions or advice would greatly be appreciated. Mark B. San Diego, CA

anybody found a cover for this bike that fits well? Dowco Guardian Super Cover in a medium fits well without luggage. Go to a large if you plan on having hard bags left on the bike or a taller windscreen. dat brooklyn bum

Most people realise that arguing over oil choice is rather futile. Most of the various theories and practices would have been espoused by the 19 entrants at some stage, leaving the readers to decide for themselves. Mister_T

Hi all. I just got my self a 2003 KLR and heard of this amazing group from the dealer. Like in the Book, Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy - imagine an alien from another time and place temporarily translocated into an equally alien culture. That's me. And the only KLR owner (for that fact any biker) I know within 5000 mi is myself. So there. Thanks guys. Now I have some heavy duty archive search to do. Bye. A17? USA. It really dont matter to me but am just curious to know where most of you are from besides the US. I know a lot from Canada must be around and Australia, and others....

Hi newbie Wanderbiker: Welcome to the best group of bikers and source of KLR info on the Internet. This group was a great resource of info for me, when I was preparing for our (my Yorkie rides with me) tour. DSN_KLR650 Listers also invited us to stay in their homes and offered any possible assistance, while we traveled. I am a Floridian currently in Lima, Peru, taking a break, getting married and now getting ready to continue our Americas Motopaseo 3-up (me, my new Peruvian wife & Punky) in another few weeks. You have chosen a fine machine. Ask questions and search the archives and you will learn how to equip the KLR to serve you even better. If you plan to adventure tour, the KLR does it well. I and a number of others are currently riding many 10's of thousands of miles on KLR's in difficult conditions in around the world adventure tours. On this tour, my KLR has performed flawlessly for 34,000 miles, except for one instance, which was my fault not the KLR's. I put a small jet in the carb to make up for the lack of oxygen in the Andes Mountains. At high altitude it ran great. I was not smart enough to know that I needed to change the jet back to a bigger one for sea level. The result was a burned piston and rings in Peru. I now have a .145 jet, clip adjusted in the middle and it works fine high and low with a K&N air filter and Yosh pipe. None of this would have been necessary, if the bike had been left stock in the first place. I bought it used with the jet, filter and pipe already changed. Enjoy your KLR and this group. Dig this; wife got tired of hearing me whine about wanting a klr650 so she just went and bought me one. Had it licensed, insured, ready to go and delivered a few weeks ago Saturday without even telling me. I was shocked. Anyway, ever since then, mother nature has decided to crap snow, ice, rain and cold on top of me at least weekly. Folks around here (North Carolina) look at you kinda funny when you're riding a bike with snow on the ground and you're bundled up like you're gonna climb the friggin Matterhorn. So I've been spending my time buying up little doodads to stick on my new scooter. JCWhitney trunk, tall windshield, grips, master cylinder shield...dammit if the weather don't break soon I'm gonna start doing donuts in the garage. So far 150 miles is all I've been able to get in without loosing an appendage to frostbite. Oh well I guess I'll just read the list while I make motor noises and ride my imaginary "air bike" till the temp climbs outta the 40's. Looking forward to Spring. Sincerely, Jim Hubbard
