looseness in steering head

Post by cedarpond2000 » Sun Oct 23, 2005 7:35 am

I noticed that I have freeplay in the steering head on my 2004 KLR . I was walking the bike down my driveway and when I was applying the front brake, I could see a little movement in the area where I believe the top of the bearing is located. I also could feel looseness or free play in the front fork as I appied the front brake. Is this something my dealer should look at or is this something I could work on ? Thanks John

looseness in steering head

Easy way to do it: a.. Motorcycle on lift (but not necessary) b.. Take handlebars off to get to large nut underneath ( mark handlebar to triple clamp, to realign later) c.. Loosen that large nut. d.. Take a dull punch, screwdriver or something and tap the lower lock nut under the triple clamp clockwise e.. Check that your front end turns freely as you tighten. If you feel friction then back off just a little. f.. Tighten large nut, mount handle bars. Proper way would include some way of checking the torque on the lock nuts... this has always worked for me. You just have to "feel" the proper tightness. West
