oil leak from shock absorber assembly?
Looking for some helpful hints concerning a small oil leak I just
noticed coming from lever arm or some other part of the shock absorder
assembly. Is this common and if so what's the fix? i.e. is there one
or two seals I should check first?
I'm assuming the leak is coming from the assembly because I can't see
oil on anything else. Small drops are almost directly on the bolts of
the lever arm.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Yep...it's happened. You have blown the seals in the shock. It's gonna be expensive, too. I replaced mine last spring. You have a few options, the first of which is to try to rebuild yourself. I believe there is a link to this self-abuse in http://www.bigcee.com/klr650faq.html#suspension somewhere. Or you can have it rebuilt by someone who knows what to do by finding a link in the bigcee FAQ I listed or someplace like http://www.multisurfacemotorcycling.com/products/klrprod.htm. Or you can do like I did and get a new Progressive 420 shock ( http://www.progressivesuspension.com/420.html ) at http://www.mawonline.com/, for instance, for about $350. You could also spend a pile bunch more cash for a slightly better shock, if you feel so inclined. (I don't have those links handy, but there's plenty info out there.)
My buy vs. rebuild decision was made simple by the fact that the cheapest rebuild I could find was going to cost over $300 and I could buy new for another fifty bucks.
Good luck.

The only reply I got was that I've blown the seal on the shock absorber - does this mean I should only replace the shock and nothing else? Also, since it's only losing a drop every couple of days, how much time do you think there is before it can't be ridden?

technically, you can ride the thing until it bececomes a giant pogo
stick
the more you ride it, the more oil will come out, the less damping
you'll get, hence the pogo stick. you will also risk scratching the
chrome rod in the middle. if that gets scratched and not
changed/repolished , you risk straching the next seal and blowing the
seal , again, back to square one.dangerous too. you get to feel like
garry mccoy for a while
my advice, get a stiffer spring , and sent it for a rebuild. upt
good high quality shock oil too while they're in there. and you'll
have a winner. pump the nitrogen inside. and walla
make sure the rebuild has a warranty.

Damit!
I'm thinkin that's what it is too. (Blown seals cuz of lack of
protection)
Hurry and install a shield to protect your shock to keep it alive as
long as possible.
After I saw the first pile of mud on mine, I pooped a shield out of
the $3 mudflap kit at Autozone.
Here I am after lots of 2Up ridin and over 30,000 miles and a good
stock shock.
Good luck,
Rod,,,,Sheesh, the wife's Sherpa had a shield already, and I have to
poop one for the Mighty KLR, I don't get it.
