carburator issues, wot surges

Post by Jeff Jones » Wed Sep 14, 2005 5:33 pm

Another possible cause - mis adjusted float level. I haven't had this problem on my KLR but I have a KTM 360 EXC and had this problem. When doing long sand hillclimbs, my KTM would die after about 5 to 7 seconds of WOT climbing. Then it would start just fine and run fine until the next climb. Turned out, the float needle wasn't opening far enough to keep the float bowl filled at those engine speeds/throttle openings. The adjustment was a PITA to get just right. To big an opening and when going from trailing to open throttle, it would cough several times (on the first adjustment) to one time (next adjustment). Next, it was back to dying again after about 8 seconds and finally I got it right. The book showed how to eyeball a piece of the float being parallel to the side of the carb but it wasn't good enough. I finally found a way to measure the amount of bend with a caliper and was able to get it "just right." Jeff Jones
