Folks, Just picked up a '95 KLR650 with 40k miles on it, it's my first bike. Top end rebuilt at 30k. I paid $1500 for it, the shop I took it to for inspection wants $600 to get it on the road. I have a deal with the guy that if it takes more than $100 to get it on the road, I can return it within 7 days. Is it worth it to keep the bike? He's original owner, seems like he took good care of it, almost exclusively rode it on-road, problems are all wear items ( tires, brakes, bearings, brake disc), doesn't seem to smoke at all, runs, shifts well. New tires alone will cost $100 or more, front/rear brake pads another $40-50, a new front rotor is probably $100 or more, bearings I can't remember. These prices are just parts, no labor. $600 sounds like a lot, but not out of the question considering dealer mark-ups and it depends somewhat on the kinds of tires you spec. If you like the bike and want to keep it, take the quote to the seller and ask for few hundred dollars back. Age-related items to think about are gas tank rust (check for a brown stain by the left rear part of the tank), cracked rubber parts, rust (especially bad on the forks, will kill the seals). I'd return the bike just on the principle that you were raped on the price. That bike is only worth a grand tops. Now the mechanic is trying to rape you out the other end too. For the $2,100 you'd have wrapped up, you can get a lower-mileage KLR that's ready to hit the road with no hassles. I thought I recently saw an ad on this list for some guy in PA selling a '95 KLR650 with 7K miles for $2,100. Mark

Well Steve, I was wondering why the top end had to be rebuilt at 30,000 miles. You long time KLR riders out there, isn't that a little early. Maybe it wasn't taken care of as well as you think. Return the bike, or ask the guy to pay for the $600 repairs. That would work out to $2100 for a 11 year old bike with a lot of miles. Top end rebuilt at 30K? seems a little soon. I bought a 2006 new OTD for $5199. You should be able to get a bike with half those miles for that price. Jeff [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I'm loving the Cortech Solutions I bought a few months back. Way better than the 330+ buck BMW boots I got a few years back. Andy in Louisiana uhhhh about Hurricanes and relief efforts. Unless you've walked the walk, don't talk the talk. That's all I got say bout that < As Forest Gump would say.
