nklr global warming?

Howdy listers, At the end of the month, I'm taking a trip from southern California to Gerlach, NV (northeast of Reno). I want to get to Winnemucca so I can take Jungo Rd to and/or from Gerlach. But other than that, I don't know any good dual sport roads. I'll be coming up 395 and am hoping there are some good KLR type roads going pretty much in a north/northeast direction north of Bishop. By KLR type roads, I mean graded dirt. Short, more technical sections are welcomed but I need to make time so most will have to be fast dirt stuff. Thanks in advance, Jeff Jones

It's a nice place. The local whorehouse even requests livestock haulers to park their rigs elsewhere to avoid offending the rest of the clientelle. Now, if you go to Paradise Valley; better yet, if you start there and come out in Owyhee in one piece...

Jeff, Drop me an email and I'm sure I can help. I live in Gardnerville, just south of Carson City, and have spent the last 10 years exploring western Nevada on a KLR. I can get you to Gerlach (and would recommend spending a day to do the High Rock Desert Canyon Emmigrant Trail loop north of Gerlach) and back with some most interesting routes. Pat G'ville, NV

Jeff the Black Rock Desert is a magnificent place to explore. I went to school in Reno (UNR) and we used to take trips out to the Black Rock. Ask someone in Gerlach to way to the hot springs, I think this is on the High Rock Mountain Trail. Get out on the playa and haul ass. It's really fun. In the distance you'll see a black mountain, that's where the hotsprings are. At the hot springs, there is an old immigrant wagon there. It's a good place to camp and jump in the hot springs. Just beyond that are two dry lake beds. It's a beautiful area. If you're going alone, tell a BLM guy in Gerlach and what time you expect to be back through there. Just got to be very, very careful that you found the right hot springs before jumping in. There are hot springs out there that will parboil you in seconds. A stock KLR tank will easily get you through the High Rock Desert Canyon and back to Gerlach to fill back up, just you got to get back to Gerlach before 6. In years past I've just used this gas station to leave word that if I'm not back to gas up I'm more than likely needing help. Wilderness camping in the Canyon is possible if the creek is still flowing, but ther is some great camping if you swing east to Cedarville. Also a great set of mountains to ride in. The road out to the Canyon runs along the western edge of the Black Rock and it is an interesting place to ride across. The first year I had my KLR, back in '95, I took my first trip up that way on the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend. I stumbled onto the old, informal version of the Burning Man and didn't get home until Tuesday. Pat G'ville, NV
