I've owned a whole slew of bikes since I began riding in 1975, and I have come to prefer singles and twins. As to shared qualities, they are both a complete blast to ride. Of course, to me, an HD is a motorcycle, not a lifestyle. ed A17 xl883 gs1150 (for that occasional multi fix)

yeah...they have similar appeal because they're BOTH MOTORCYCLES!

On the other hand I find it fascinating (and very unexpected) that there
appears to be a significant number of experienced riders who have an
affinity for both the KLR AND the HD bikes. There are clearly
differences (configuration and price being the most obvious), but are
there some qualities that both of these bikes share that have similar
appeal?

Hi Scott,
Maybe you don't remember, but lots of Harley riders would get together at their parties, and hang a Honda from a tree. You could buy a turn to hit it with a fair sized piece of pipe. The bike was usually a hunk of battered metal by the end of the night. That little party activity fits your statement to a "T" if you ask me. Harley folks threw the first stone, drew first blood, etc. However I must say that two wrongs don't make a right. Personally I don't like Harleys because of the way many of their riders acted toward everyone else. Not fair to the corporation, but it's how I feel.
best regards

Rick,
I understand...and I know there are Harley riders like that out there...just like there are "less than desirable" KLR riders...they exist in all motorcycle brand/model circles...the "mine is better because it's what I have" mentality.
Personally, I don't belong to any such clique except the one that says ALL motorcycles are COOL!
I like Harleys, Hondas, Yahamas, Suzukis, Kawasakis...the list goes on and on...
Regards,
Scott

But some are cooler. For example, in the 70's my dad had a Jawa 350cc
"Californian" imported from Czechoslovakia. It was a twin cylinder two
stroke road bike that drooled oil like a baby with a tooth ache, spewed
enough smoke to clear a ten mile radius of mosquitoes, and could barely
reach 60mph wide open, but it had a sound like a fine classical guitar
that I can still hear in my head.

I agree fully. My dislike for Harleys is due to the predjudice behavior of others. Not the most mature behavior on my part. We (myself included) need to stop judging the book by it's cover.

Yep...it's not easy to do...with the age-old stereotypes that exist.
I've seen/met some of those Harley riders that reinforce the stereotypes, as well as observed posts from some of the same KLR and BMW riders that also reinforce negative stereotypes about them.
It's hard to look past them and realize that all riders of a particular make/model are not like that.
I don't appreciate being lumped into that "Harley" stereotype...but if someone is ignorant enough to lump me in with them, then I'm not gonna sweat it too much...it just makes me realize I don't want to meet/associate with that particular person because they have nothing to offer anyway except a closed mind, which I don't care to be around.
Life is too short to be associated with idiots... ;^)
NO offense intended to ANYONE...if you fall into the above described group, you know who you are...
Regards,
Scott

I have never understood the animosity a lot of Harley guys have toward
Japanese bikes. They don't seem to have the same animosity toward
European bikes for some reason. Racism ? Maybe? Maybe if you told them
about a third of a Sportster is built by the Japanese (brakes , shocks
, forks, carbs etc.) they might feel better - or worse. I think the
Goldwing is entirely US built. A lot of Japanese bike riders have the
same animosity toward Hogly's. They are both fun to ride but never I
have been too crazy about ape hangers or pull back bars but after
sitting on a few sport bikes and owning a Concourse the crouch riding
style ....... is a pain also after a few miles. I think dual sport
bikes have the most comfortable riding position for an old guy.

new generation of klr's
You guys won't believe what I saw yesterday...
A CBR 900RR towing a small trailer!!!
I bought a brand new '93 CBR 900RR back in 92...kept it about a year then traded in on a leftover Goldwing - a serious ergonomics issue (for me) with the CBR.
Goldwings are built in Marysville Ohio but are still Japanese motorcycles. I don't even want to get into that one. Had that argument last week with a guy who once owned a couple Valkyries and several Goldwings, but has now committed himself to Harley (and all the snobbery that is possible). He is the typical "negative-stereotypical" Harley rider...he now believes if you buy anything made/sold by the Japanese, that you're a traitor...our discussion nearly came to blows. I served our great country for 20 years in the USAF and take MUCH offense to being called a traitor because I'd buy a Toyota or Honda or KLR...
