If it weren't for Harleys who would we throw rocks at?

I think they're making a mistake. The overall cost per mile including initial purchase price, insurance, depreciation, repair, maintenance, "mandatory" upgrades, fuel, and all the gear (helmets and jackets are not cheap) make it difficult for most people to justify a motorcycle on a cost basis. There are two things that will tilt the equation in favor of the bike: the owner doing all maintenance and repair, and high miles per year (to allow the fuel savings to offset other costs). If someone follows the owner's manual maintenance schedule religiously, uses only OEM and/or dealer-supplied parts, and has a dealer do *all* work, their "cheap" KLR will get expensive really fast. I can make it cheap, but I do my own wrenching, hit eBay for parts, run Kendas, adapt parts from other bikes, etc etc. The average Joe won't be as resourceful as I've been. I'm not sure I can agree with you figures. The most I can lose in
depreciation is $5000, the full cost of the bike. Most cars depreciate that
much in 2 years or less. Maintenance is about the same hourly rate as an
auto mechanic but there are far fewer systems to need adjustment on a bike.
Tires are indeed expensive and really don't last long but a little smart
purchasing can cut this expense drastically. Insurance is a fraction of car
insurance. Upgrades are not necessary. Well, maybe the doohickey, but oil
changes and such aren't free for cars either. Ok, the one unique expense is
the helmet. You don't need one in a car but the jacket and other gear aren't
necessary, just recommended. Please tell me again how motorcycles are about
the same cost per mile ast cars.

Why throw rocks at all???
Sounds like a bit of insecurity to me...the old "I'll

All of it? Even the part where I complement you? I guess you're right

new generation of klr's
Mike,
First of all...I don't need to justify owning a
Harley...to you or anyone else. I wanted one, I bought
it, I'm enjoying riding it immensely...end of story.
I also don't need any gratuitous complements from you
or anyone else about my Harley. I bought it for ME and
MY enjoyment...the same reason I bought my KLR.
All I'm saying is you shouldn't take it upon yourself
to decide what's "best for everyone". We can make our
own decisions about what motorcycles, accessories,
etc. to buy. And if we fall prey to the great HD
marketing machine, then so be it...you shouldn't lose
any sleep over it.
Regards,
Scott

new generation of klr's
These emails are for tech Q&A's NOT FOR PET PEEVES!!!!!!
A few facts: The fastest motorcycle on the earth is a Harley.
In the NHRA the Harley V Twin won last year and is winning this
year. Beating Suzuki *
all the others.
(Quarter mile drag bikes)
Ergo, a Harley is built for cruzing and if needed it can be built up for
speed and will be as fast or faster than any 4 cylinder Jap bike out there.
I know you're saying "The Jap bikes come stock fast". Well I say to that,
"Where on earth do I need to go 150 mph or better???????? Where".
It's the Cadillac of bikes.
I love my KLR. I also loved my Fatboy and Ultra Classic.

new generation of klr's
I don't see this particular line of discussion going anywhere
productive.
On the other hand I find it fascinating (and very unexpected) that there
appears to be a significant number of experienced riders who have an
affinity for both the KLR AND the HD bikes. There are clearly
differences (configuration and price being the most obvious), but are
there some qualities that both of these bikes share that have similar
appeal?
