first maintenance sticker shock!

Post by Rick McCauley » Tue Aug 02, 2005 6:57 am

My 500 mile service was $135 at Brenny's in the Quad City. That included setting the valves to the loose end of specs, not just checking them. They charged my friend the same to do his, and $120 to do the 500 mile check on his new Z 750. All 3 were purchased there. I would print out all the replies you have gotten from this group and take them to the dealer and demand a FREE 500 mile service as you paid too much for the bike to begin with. Always ask for more to start with. Maybe he will at least come down to a reasonable price. I would also ask to watch the service being done. This guy doesn't sound trustworthy. I was also scammed by a dealer once. It is not a pleasant experience. The name of the bad dealer is Douglas and Frye Honda / Polaris in Sterling IL. Stay out of there. Never buy extended warranty. They are a ripoff. (that is my opinion) Rick A17 Jason Carver wrote: Okay, so I bought a brand new 2005 KLR650 less than four weeks ago from the local dealership. Paid over $6k and even kicked another $390 for two additional years of extended protection from Kawasaki. They told me to bring it in as soon as it was done with the break-in period for its first maintenance check. I just called to schedule that check since I'm at just over 500 miles. They tell me to expect this first maintance check to cost $500 in parts and labor!!! Is this a joke? I spend six and a half grand on a brand new bike and four weeks later I gotta come up with half a grand more? Please someone tell me that this isn't normal. If I had known that this was the deal, I'd have kept the $390 for the extended warranty. This raises two main questions: 1) Am I getting screwed here? 2) What parts do I need at 500 miles that aren't covered by the new vehicel warranty? I gotta be missing something here. Paid $200 Can. For my first maintenance (valve check only) a month ago and now regret it. Having read Mark's instructions, there's nothing I couldn't have done myself; planning to do all maintenance myself henceforth. I believe maintenance stuff is part of the KLR's fun and there is so much to learn when you do it yourself. If you do get it done by the dealer, however, make sure they give you the valve clearance readings before and after (if adjusted). Steph A19, Ottawa, Canada

The fact you got scewered from the get go,(the OTD price and extended warranty scam) doesn't mean you have to let them do it again. I'm thinkin you'll end up like most of us, with the opinion that, no dealer will ever touch our bike again! One of the best things about the Mighty KLR is the support available from the BadAzz Boyz that ride them! Rod,,,with the first tank scratch on my beautiful spanker new 03 from the stupid service guy's metal zipper on his jacket on the 1 mile service ride, thank you very much! --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "Todd Johnson" wrote:

Did you at least get paint sealant and a couple PCV valves? Are you sure you didn't pay $5600 and the .5K is $50? Did you get something else you're not telling us about? If you make $250K a year, don't worry be happy. Don't really know what else to say. Jim A71

The number one rule in life is that we will continue to be presented with lessons... You bought a really nice bike. Enjoy it. Don't attach negative waves to it. It's only a bad deal if you let it become a bad deal. The way I see it is that you paid for some gimme's up front. When you need valve shims, go down to the dealer and tell him you want to trade for some he has in stock. Kawasaki makes a pretty good tank bag - get it at cost. I'm sure you can get the sales guy and the parts and service managers in the loop to get the best out of the situation you can. Insinuate your way into being their pal - if it doesn't compromise your integrity. Make sure they know that you know that ***you treated them right*** by paying what they asked for the bike. There's some "point of pride" at the dealership. Work it. Give them the opportunity to live up to their brag. Be really nice until it's time not to be nice, and then know what the arguments are on both sides and what you need to call it done - because "going back" will be very difficult. If you have a crappy attitude from the start, they'll pick that up and write you and any goodwill you paid for off immediately. I bought an '01 KLR this winter. Doing the maintenance is easy, and it's easily the best legal therapy I've found (I'm no expert on "alternative" therapies, but I've heard stories) - Zen and the art, and all that stuff. Beats the heck out of watching TV... partly because I can't stomach much that's on the tube - sick to death of commercials, and partly because I'm tired of arguing about who should have the remote (I always lose). Men dominate the remote??? Faggedaboutit! There's just so darn many cool little upgrades that you can do to the KLR, and they're not really expensive. My $0.02 Chuck - A15 and lovin' it

the arguments are on both sides and what you need to call it done - because "going back" will be very difficult. ] If you go back, here's what to watch for: If they are waiting at the front door, and have a red carpet laid out, go in and hope for the best. If they are waiting at the front door, and are holding a jar of Vaseline, run, don't walk, to another dealer. They should only get ONE chance to screw a customer over. I changed dealers for this reason last year.
