I know of an '89 KLR 650 with 16,000 miles for sale for a very fair price. Anyone out there with a KLR that old? How is the longevity of the KLR? I know about the doohickey problem and would replace it and the spring. Overall this bike appears to be in good condition and has a few aftermarket parts, including a steel braid front brake line. I rode it a little and it seemed to run fine. Should I take a chance or forget about it?

I just bought an 89. $1500 with 23 thou on it. Some extras, nothing to get too excited about, 'cept for the Works remote res shock and a couple other things. It's a good bike, I ride it all the time, at least when it's not pouring like it has lately around here (N CA) Best $1500 I ever spent (so far so good). Used to have a 98, this one seems just as good. Doohickeys explode on 89s sometimes, sometimes not.

1. Every used bike is a crap shoot. Hell, the new ones are too. 2. For the experienced rider, if it rides and feels good, it probably is good. Look it over carefully, listen to the machine. 3. High mileage is generally worse than more years of age. 4. Exposure (sun rot, too dry -too wet) can wreak havoc with gaskets, seals, and exposed steel, even oxidizing aluminum rims and such. 5. Watch for dry split hoses, cracked leaking seals, dry shrunken gaskets. She'll need TLC, Just figure on replacing a few part seals and such, as well as battery, maybe carb kit, change all fluids, new tires, etc. Mark. DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "modphd " wrote:

I am 46, and my riding buddy is 39. Funny note though. After 4 months of KLR only ownership, he went out and bought a Z750 for riding by himself. I guess the rocket gene is still active at 39. Yer only as old as you look. I am 58 and have the'01 KLR650 (Warthog) and an '04 ZX-10R (Nellie). Between the two of them, I put on about 20,000 miles a year. A friend of mine, who happens to be pushing 70 just purchased a new ST1300. I tend to think bikers stay younger longer - in terms of their outlook and activity level. I have had Litre plus machines too, and it sure is exilerating to ride at triple digit speeds. However, I find them kind of mundane at legal speeds, so I spent most of my time riding much faster than is healthy, or responsible. On the KLR I find myself grinning at 35 mph riding down a rutty dirt road. :-) Driving at warp speed doesn't make you young, and neither does sitting on a crotch rocket going 60 mph. 20,000 miles a year ! One or more of the following must describe you. Rich. (no need to work) Retired (lot's of time to spare) Single (also lot's of time to spare) Rick A17 Walter Mitty wrote: Yer only as old as you look. I'm 58 and just purchased a 2005 KLR650. Other than being inseam challenged getting off and on ( i use the footpeg method when the kickstand is down), I found that this bike has opened up a whole new world of on/off road exploring for me. I have a camp up in Northern New Hampshire and there are hundreds of miles of secondary/dirt roads that are available for exploration. I rode Saturday for 80 miles on a combination of secondary /dirt roads, saw a nice deer standing in a meadow. Plus a came across a 1974 Suzuki Titan 500 in really nice condition just to putt around on. Life is not a dress rehearsal! [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I just bought my A12 last year and up to that time couldn't find a good reason to look forward to retirement. Now I do. I plan to cover lots more ground when the day comes to hang-up my accountant and business cell phone. John_Harkins@... wrote: I'm 58 and just purchased a 2005 KLR650.
