Really? My fan turns on when the needle is a bit beyond the half. Mine comes on right at the half way mark.

cooling fan
Like most, my A14 does the "fan on" thing at just a hair above
half-way. Tolerances could fluctuate on the senser, though. The important
thing is the actual temperature. Anyone know the measured operating
temperatures for the KLR?
Also, astoriagreek: check that the fan is free-spinning. Put your finger
in there (w/the engine off) and give it a push. If there's any resistance,
you need to adjust things so there's nothing impeding the fan's path. Shifts
in the position of any of several items around the fan may cause this (bent
radiator or bracket, loosened or shifted bolts or screws, cowling warpage,
etc.).
After my radiator was bent in an accident last year, my fan wouldn't
work. I had to bend the fan bracket to let the fan blades spin freely again.
It was scary seeing that neeedle rush up there and hear the radiator start
to sing!

I bought a used KLR a few weeks ago and I have never noticed the fan

Thanks,

You probably haven't gotten the bike hot enough yet. The fan only runs intermittently to keep the coolant temp below some Kawi-defined threshold sensed by that little plug with the wire at the bottom of the radiator. A couple of miles of stop-and-go traffic on a warm day will usually get my fan moving. There was just a thread here about testing your fan. I believe the procedure was to disconnect the wire from the radiator sensor, insert a paper clip into the female connector, and ground the paper clip to the frame. __Arden> running. On mine you don't need the clip. Bogdan> I believe the procedure was to disconnect the wire > from the radiator sensor, insert a paper clip into the female > connector, and ground the paper clip to the frame. > > __Arden > >

Right you are, Bogdan. I just went out to the parking lot and with no key in the ignition and no paper clip in the connector, grounded the fan wire against one of the psuedo-fins on the cylinder and, voila!, the fan came on. __Arden> > > > I believe the procedure was to disconnect the wire > > from the radiator sensor, insert a paper clip into the female > > connector, and ground the paper clip to the frame. > > > > __Arden > > > > > On mine you don't need the clip. > > Bogdan

Wasn't it prescient of KHI to design in those faux fins just for this purpose ? Bogdan> Right you are, Bogdan. Hi List, i`ve been stocking up w/ extra parts for my moab trip
(levers, cables etc.) and the cooling fan has come to mind. All I see in
the manual is a relay, temp switch, and fuse. Is the relay and switch
reliable?? Should I bring an extra? Or is there a bypass that I could do
that would get me out of trouble and or to a dealer?? Do dealers
commonly stock these items?? .... BTW when does the fan kick in?? (i`ve
only ridden it in cold weather )
