intermitant engine shutdown

I have a KLR 650 A18. 2500 miles. On my way home from work I went over a road hump (a speed control device about 8-12" high by 5-6 feet across, that cross the road). Just after that the engine died. I pulled over, put it in neutral and it restarted. Went about 200 yards to the next hump and went through the same scenario. The next time was while slowing on smooth level road. This time I bump started it after a few seconds of no power. The last time it took about ten seconds before I could bump start the bike. The bike is running flawlessly prior to and after each of these incidents. I have been unable to duplicate this when I try. The first two were after going over a bump, so I tried going over a curb, across rough ground, and going at varying speeds over humps. I can't duplicate the phenomenon. Ambient temp: 105 Temp on gauge: at or below the center of the gauge I bought the bike used and on the way home it died because of the electrical connection under the fuel tank had come loose. Sorry. I left out the fact that I did the kickstand bypass several weeks ago.

I suspect the kickstand momentarily dropped over the bump and the safety switch was deployed cutting the ignition. You may want to consider bypassing it. Walt

Check your wires to make sure they're still twisted together. Also look at your clutch bypass. If the contacts on that bounced, you could get a momentary cut-out too. Also, do you happen to have a very heavy keychain? One with lots of dangling keys? It could be that this puts enough pressure on your ignition switch when bouncing a particular way to make the ignition cut out.

When you say 'no power', do you mean no ENGINE power, or do you mean that the lights and everything else went off too? If *everything* went off, check to make sure your battery connections are tight. In fact, do that anyhow. And seriously think about replacing the OEM-style battery with the AGM-style battery (see the FAQ, I have the Yuasa AGM-style battery, which is an exact fit). A bear knocked over my KLR and it sat on its side overnight. When I got it back upright the next day, after letting it sit for a while to let the oil drain out of the cylinder and head back into the crankcase (believe me, you do NOT want hydraulic lock on a cylinder that big!), it cranked right up. With the OEM-style battery, that would not have happened, because the acid would have drained out. -E
